Can a 500watt thermaltake powersupply run a gtx 470

Ok my friend has a computer that has a Thermaltake TR2 W0379RU 500W ATX 12V v2.2 Power Supply would that be enough to run a gtx 470. See I checked the minium specs for a gtx 470 and it said 550 watts. But could he get away with using a good 500watt supply.

I would not call a TT TR2 a good power supply. However, I think it will be good enough for a GTX 470, as long as he is not doing any overclocking with his system.

I bought it for him 3 years ago back then it was a decent power supply. and thermaltake is a good name in psu. Ive had mine for like 5 years min

What is he going to run it on? An overclocked 8 core AMD system might be too much, but any core i3 or i5 would be fine.

I've had all sorts of instability issues with three different TR2 600 PSUs running a single 7970 with a Celeron G1620... I RMA'd them twice before I finally gave up and just stuck a Corsair TX 750 and I haven't had any issues ever since.

Used to swear by Thermaltake and loved their toughpower series of psus but had a 700w tr2 take out the memory, a i7 2600k and a gtx580 along with the motherboard in a build a couple years ago.

Corsair has been good to me in both budget psus and with my current. Don't even attempt to push your TR2 with that gtx470.

Thermaltake have some excellent and also crappy PSUs. You have to be selective. Their budget ones (incl TR models) are not good. Their Tough Power series (600w and above) are decent. There 1000w+ units are excellent. Bear in mind that neither TT nor Corsair make PSUs, they source them out.
