Can a 533fsb P4 CPU work on a 400fsb MSI board?

Hi. I have an unused P4 2.4Ghz CPU that came off a 533MHz FSB motherboard and I'd like to upgrade my youngest's system with it. Her board is a 3 or 4 year old MSI with a 400fsb. It seems pretty flexible with it's o/c abilities . . . I can dial up the fsb clear to and above what that CPU needs but I don't know if this can or should work.

Any idea?

Thanks,

Glenn.

A 533FSB is actually a 133Mhz FSB. A 400FSB is actually a 100Mhz FSB. So, as long as your board can support a 133Mhz FSB, then you should be able to drop in the chip and run it at full speed.

Yes, I'm aware of the quad pump and yes, I can dial in 133. If I do that, then I guess I'll have to worry about the memory speed . . . I would bet there's enough flexibility to ratio that back down. I'll have to play with it. It would be nice to get up from the existing 1.8 cpu to that 2.4.

I tried that once..exact same senerio..it ended with a dead PSU and motherboard..

I had a 400mhz FSB 1.6ghz northwood, but I had it overclocked, with the FSB at 533mhz. So I figured what the heck, I'll slap my brand new $700 at the time 3.06ghz 533mhz FSB northwood on there and see if it boots. It booted up, posted, got to windows and then POP..smoke coming out of the PSU, and fried motherboard..I had to save up for a new motherboard, it took about a month before I could test the CPU to make sure it was still OK..fortunatly it was.

So basicly..I wouldn't recomend trying it..

Hmmm. Well, it's been running a couple of hours now. The board automatically set the voltage to the 1.5v stamped on the CPU and all seems well. Maybe your voltage was off?The bios had a CPU setting anywhere from 100 clear up to 200 MHz in 1 MHz increments. So I set it to 133 and Windows is reporting a 2.4g cpu. The memory speed choices were less than I thought. . . 200, 266 or auto. I left it on auto.

So long as the mobo supports the proper voltages, it will work. I was going to say that a worst case scenario would require you to run the chip on the 400Mhz(100x4) fsb, but smoking a motherboard is worse.

Some motherboards aren't happy when OCed, and if it doesn't officially support the 533 bus, then you would be OCing it to run at 533. The CPU may support it, but the motherboard may get pissy because it doesn't. That case, running at 400, lowering the clock speed of the CPU, would resolve the issue.

You could also pick up a new mobo, simple s478 boards are still fairly common and pretty cheap.

Yeah, a faster 400 mhz cpu is most likely equally as cheap as a new MB but I was just trying to make the best of what I had lying around. I found the receipt for that 1.8 P4 that I pulled out of there and was sick to see I paid $229 for it! What's it worth now, 15 bucks!! LOL. I hate to think about what I paid for the 2.4 cpu !!!

I'll keep an eye on it. The bios was reporting a CPU temp of 60c but that was from a cold start and I just didn't believe it.

If I did run the 2.4 at 400 instead of 533, would it still beat out the 1.8? I guess it depends on the multiplier? Isn't it illegal to talk about UNDERCLOCKING on this site?

Thanks,

Glenn.

If the mobo will let you push it, I would try to OC even further (beyond 133/533). P4 Northwoods were generally pretty good OC'ers. Just don't smoke the PSU and mobo.

I'm about to do almost the same exact thing tonight -- good thing I did a search first.

I have a spare P4 2.4GHz/533MHz and am planning to drop it into my son's P4B266 which only goes up to 400MHz FSB to replace his Celeron 1.8 GHz proc. I'm pretty sure I there's a 133MHz setting on the board's FSB.

So it looks like I should be good. My son should get a good performance boost. Will post in this thread later. Thanks!

It didn't work . On power up I only get the bios beep code of alternating high and low pitch long beeps (like an ambulance) which according to one website means there's something wrong with the CPU or the CPU is not seated properly.

Any one with any tips I'd greatly appreciate it!

It's supposed to (unofficially).

Read this whole article :

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articl...splay/asus-p4b266.html

Here's what I would do.

(1)- Make a 98se boot floppy at bootdisk.com. Delete everything on it except command.com, io.sys, and msdos.sys.

(2)- Put the Celeron back in the P4B266 system.

(3)- Download the latest bios from asus for that mobo. MAKE SURE the model # is correct, there are several variants of the P4B266 series (-C, etc). The following are links for the bios and flash utility for the basic P4B266 board.

http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/flash/aflash221.zip (bios flash utility)

http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/AS...ck478/p4b266/1010j.zip (bios file)

(4)- Copy the flash utility and bios file to the boot floppy that you made earlier.

(5)- Unplug all usb and non-essential devices from the system.

(6)- Boot from the floppy, flash your bios. Usually like this : A:\flash.exe newbios.rom (example names, it might be aflash.exe 1010j.rom or whatever)

(7)- Use the bios/cmos reset jumper to clear cmos.

(8)- Install your P4 cpu, see how it goes.

Hope that helps

My BIOS version is 1010. When I checked Asus website the latest is a beta version 1011.003. It was beta so I didn't want to try it. Just curious, how did you know about 1010j.bin?

Thanks a lot for the suggestion. Will try it tonight!

Again I'm curious..... The "j" in 1010j.bin seems to stand for "Japanese". Is it any different from the regular 1010.bin that I already flashed my mobo with? Just concerned it might not be for my mobo and render it corrupt. I notice the file sizes are different. Thanks!

Couldn't get it to work. I tried 1010j (Japanese version according to Asus website) and 1011 Beta BIOS but I only get the siren beep code. I guess there's something in the P4/2.4GHz/533MHz proc I have that the P4B266 just wouldn't recognize. In any case, I put the proc in another PC with an Asrock P4145D motherboard, same 845 chipset as the P4B266 and it worked there. Both computers have Celeron 1.8s so at least I got to upgrade one. I just wished it would work on the P4b255 because that is the more expensive (and supposedly better) board.

Anyone willing to part with a P4/2.0+GHz/400MHz proc please PM me. Thanks!

I've got a 1.8 P4 400fsb.

I also have an old "intel confidential" p4 northwood. I was able to get it as high as 2 gigs on 533 system but that was all. A better overclocker could probably do more with it. I don't know much more about it . . . I think it has a 15 multiplier.

I'm not sure what I want for either but if you're interested, I'll come up with a price.

The 1.8 will come in the original box with heat sink and fan.
