Can a Celeron D 420 stock cooler cool an X3350?

Hey guys, I ordered an X3350, which is coming this Friday. I got the OEM version since a 1 year warranty (doubled to 2 on my Visa) seems fine and I also ordered a Noctua U9B. The problem is, the U9B won't get here till Monday (if I had realized it would've taken that long, I would've paid for better shipping.) Anyway, I did also order a retail box Celeron D 420 to flash my bios with. The question is, do you guys think it would be safe to run the X3350 on the stock cooler that comes with the Celeron D until Monday (so I can put it together this weekend) or would that cooler be too weak? I don't plan on OCing or anything and this is all going into a P182 (120mm exhaust fan is like 3 inches from the cpu), so case cooling shouldn't be a problem either. I don't wanna fry anything but if the Celeron cooler can work for the time being, it'd save me a lot of time (otherwise I need to wait till the weekend after to put it together.)

I saw that cooler (I have one) its a joke. I doubt it. Just wait a couple of days, or borrow from a friend.

definitely don't try it, unless you significantly underclock your X3350 until you get a better cooler on there.

Yes you can. I've got retail X3350 and it comes with the same puny heatsink like all D420/21xx series do. If intel deems this small heatsink is safe to cool X3350 then you should be OK for a few days.

Although to be safe if I were you I'd doublecheck that I installed it correctly, made sure it ran at least 50% of the speed and didn't run any orthos/prime/cpuburn until you get proper heatsink.

LOL! 2 vs. 2!

I think I'll hold out for more replies to see.

Ahh... thanks. I think I'll wait then.

Edit: Next question: Would it be a good idea to piece the system together with the Celeron proc (would this proc even work w/ Vista?), install Vista 32 and stuff, then just swap processors when the new cpu comes in or would Vista have a fit over me having a completely different cpu in there? I have Ultimate Vista retail, so having to reactivate shouldn't be an issue I think...

Heh, if you really want to insist on it, I don't know if they are absolutely identical because I don't know if the fans have the same speed. However, it is the same half-height heatsink that comes 2180/420 series and that is missing copper core. You should be fine as long as you don't stress your CPU.

I wouldn't button it all up in the case, because then you will just have to undo it and most likely will have to unwire it and pull the mobo back out to mount the new CPU/HSF.
I would put it together this weekend outside the case with the cely (test bench style) and load Vista and apps, update the bios, etc.. Then moday you are ready to mount the HSF, mount everything in the case and your ready to go.

And I would think it would be fine to run the x3350 at stock speeds for a couple of days on the cheapo HSF, just boot it up put it under a load and check the temps real quick. If the the temps start getting crazy shut it down and put the cely back in until monday.

The Celeron's stock cooler is barely enough to cool the Celeron itself. At stock, 45C idle & 55C load, room temp 24C. The E2160 comes with a better cooler, actually. At least the one that I got. It was noticeably heavier than the Celeron's.

Actually I was wrong on one count. Just came home and checked heatsink on 3350. It does have copper insert (ones on 420/2180 do not), but size wise it is still identical to 420/2180 series.

Just put it on a 1066 fsb which would drop cpu speed to 2.13ghz (thats pretty big), and undervolt it a bit if necessary. Putting on windows is not going to even put a 10% load on this chip. I wouldn't start prime95 for hours or something, nor try to play games. But installing windows is nothing. You're not trying to play with it, just get stuff set up, drivers, OS etc. Hell if that doesn't cut it, 800fsb...LOL. At 1.6ghz I think you could run all year with games too...LOL.

Don't forget it will shut itself down at around 83C if memory serves.

Odd readings -- I'm seeing 20c at idle on a Celeron 420 with stock cooler:

CPU Temp: +20.0 C (high = +80.0 C, hyst = +75.0 C) [CPU diode ]

Maybe 28c max on 100% load. The cooler is flimsy and very annoying in it's lock down mechanism (or lack thereof) but it does work.

edit: Hrm... That is the CPU diode but the CPU itself is reporting 36c at idle. So YMMV .
