Can a cop pull you over for your stereo being too loud?

I've heard yes and no. I can't imagine they can, but I'm asking anyway.

If yes, what is considered "too loud"?

If you cruise by my apartment at 3AM with your window down, playing rap at full volume, I can only HOPE the cops would be able to pull you over.

In my city, if they can hear you from more than 25 feet away, they can give you a fine. Thats just a city ordinance though, so you can pretty much play it alot louder anywhere else in the state.

Yeah, I can see that being a problem, but lets say I'm driving through a non-residential area(like around shopping malls, stores, etc), during reasonable daylight hours, can they?

What get's me is they put all this money into the bass but they leave the stock paper cone speakers in their 89 accord, which the speakers are shot to all hell so all you can really hear is BOOOOOMMM, squeek squeek, BOOOM, squeek squeek

i was once told they would have to hear it at 50ft and be able to tell you what genre of music it is to pull you over to turn it down. They can ticket you if they can name the song

No joke, i'm sure that's not accurate, but yes you can be pulled over.

In Chicago and some parts of the metro area, they can (and do) also impound your car (minimum $750.00 to get it back).

"Too Loud" is audible @ 600 feet (about one city block).

I'm all for it. Jack up the fine to $1500.00 while they're at it too ( the fine increases daily for "storage fees"...).

I'd settle for no fine, but you have to rip out and trash your player and speakers on the spot.

Whatever. As long as the noise stops.

If your music is loud enough to travel through your closed window through my closed window on a busy intersection at a stoplight, then it is too loud.

Most cities have a noise pollution bylaw. Besides, why would you need to play your music loud enough for people outside your car to hear?
