I jumped on a deal at Microcenter on Monday for a Visiontek Xtasy X800 XT (non PE) card for $399. Can a Dell 4600 handle it? It is a P4 2.8 with 1.5 gigs of ram.

AGP or PCIe? The CPU and memory can handle, but not max out anything. Try to get at least another 512MB for gaming,

You should be very worried about you PSU. My older 8200 has had a few problems with powering a 9800pro. "Dell Branded" products are truly craptastic!

The Dell 4600 is AGP based. (New Dell 4700 is PCIe)

My machince has a 9800pro right now but I am worried that the XT card might need more power than my machine has.

Anyone know how much more a x800 XT consumes vs a 9800 pro?

I think the question was better whether the x800xt was AGP or PCI-E, because if it's PCI-E you're SOL.

And I was worried, some Dell's have neither AGP or PCIe, but I think it's their Clereon line.

I jumped on the deal because of the price and did not even think that I might have a power issue since I already was running a 9800pro, 2 hard drives, 2 DVD drives (one is a burner) with no issues.

It has marginally higher power requirements. Im sure you will be fine since its still just one molex. When these cards came out i remember reading that the nVidia cards were power hogs, but the ATi cards were not much more power hungry than the previous chipset. I wouldnt attempt it with my PSU, but i suspect youre fine. How is your warranty? j/k Plug that badboi in as long as your PSU is >300W.

Trying to find the power supply for the 4600 on Dell's website.

I could also take the DVD rom oout since I really only need the burner. Worst case take the other drive out to help get more power for the card.

Open up your box and look at the power supply ratings (they should be easily visible). Post them here. And remember, OEM manufacturers love low-quality PSUs.

The X800XT uses about the same power as a 9800XT under load. It's not that much more than a 9800pro.

The wattage of the supply is less important than the quality. Dell generally uses quality power supplies.

Since when do you need at least 2 gigs of RAM for gaming?

Search on the Dell forums, I found a post on there awhile back that was about people's luck with the new videocards running on dell pc's with the stock psu. Most people could not get x800-series cards to run with their stock psus, but 6800/6800 gt's were running fine on them. You will probably need to invest in a new psu to run that x800 xt.

Thanks for the replies, I won't be able to try it until Saturday night so I can do some more research the next few days.

Dell forums are hit and miss with people running X800 pros and XT in a Dell 4600. Some work fine, others have issues.
