Situation:
My system has run solid for about three months. About two weeks ago, I return to the computer after stepping away (so it's just sitting idle) and return to see that the system is locked up. No keyboard response, no mouse, nothing.
Power down, wait, power up. System hangs at Windows load screen. Power down, power up, system flashes blue for a second at Windows Startup and then reboots, eventually leading to a "file missing error".
Hardware:
Asus SLI Delux
2 74 WD Raps in RAID 0
1 120gb Seagate 7200 IDE
1 gb OCZ Plat Rev II
OCZ 520w
3500+
When I reformatted, I left the IDE drive unplugged so Windows would install on the RAID 0. At first I though that my lockups were a result of the northbridge overheating due to the fan failing (popular thread here). I've monitored temps and fan speeds and nothing is out of the ordinary.
Tonight the system froze again. For the first time after reformatting three times now, I've realized that it's occurred each time I've plugged in the IDE drive. After about 10 minutes of having the drive plugged in (which Windows seems to detect fine), I get a system lock and I can't reboot into Windows xp.
I tried the Seage diagnostic but it looks like it's only good for Intel systems (seems pretty lame).
Anyone have any idea what the problem could be? Yes, I realize the drive may be toast, but if it is, why can I see it in "My Computer" and see all the files there? How could the IDE drive cause disk corruption on my SATA disks?
