Can a HD be slave w/ a dvdr as master?

I have an 80 gb seagate as master on my primary ide channel, a 40gb slave on the same channel, and a cdr as master on the secondary channel (no slave is present on the secondary channel). Yesterday I got a dvdr and a 120gb drive at BB, and I was wondering if I could install the 120 on my primary channel as slave to the seagate, and install the 40 gb as slave to the master dvdr. Will that work out? (I don't need my cdr anymore, supposedly this dvdr has 40x cdr support).

Why not get yourself an external HDD case that will rin on Firewire or USB 2? That will give you an external drive that can be used for data, docs, and other files independent of the main computer. It will also be portable to other systems. That way if something goes South in your PC, you will still have all your data, etc. And, you will not risk slowing anything down internally in your present IDE setup.

grab a pci controller card(even an ata66 will do) or up the 80 to the 120 using the supplied (the 120's) software to make new boot drive ..grab the most important stuff off the 40(placing on either DVDs or in a folder on the 120)..if you like flatten the 80GB ..drag the 40's contents there(removing the 40..over in HotDeals there is a USB 2.0 enclosure for $30 shipped from dealsonic.com )..place the DVD writer as Master(secondary channel on mobo)..the old CDR as slave on mobo's secondary controller..or.....grab a pci controller card just this past week upped a 30GB(was a fresh install with sp1 XPPro with all necessary updates and files needed for this new build) to a 160GB ..running sweetly..lotsa room....

Simple answer to your question is YES. You should keep in mind though its a serious performance hit to share 2 drives on any IDE channel. The suggestions for the external cases make good sense for the DVD writer as it will allow the IDE hard drive to run at max speed on its own channel. The DVD writer will also make full use of the USB 2.0 connection. It will also be portable to other computers, making it immensely more useful.
