Can an s939 X2 4800+ support BluRay playback?

I have a lovely little Shuttle with a Socket 939 4800+ running at stock with 2 Gig RAM (OCing is, alas, out of the question). I'm seriously thinking of popping a 9600GT or 9800GT into it (it's a NVidia video-based system and running the latest drivers, so I want to keep things simple), adding a $100 BD-ROM drive, and using it upstairs with one of the cheap new 1920x1080 Asus LCD monitors as a hidef playback system, instead of buying a standalone BD player.

But the big question is, does the 4800+ (2.4 GHz, 1 MB cache/core) have enough oomph for skip-free 1080p playback? If not, obviously the standalone is needed.

Yeah that processor with have no problems at all doing 1080P. But to be honest, pick up a HD 4350 or 3450. I don't know what you mean by "its a Nvidia video based system". It only is if you put in a Nvidia card, It can just as easily be an ATI video based system.

Those low profile cards of AMD would be cheaper than the Nvidia cards you are planning on getting. If you aren't going to use it for gaming then I suggest go with AMD instead, they'd be perfect for playback.

$10 here or there doesn't matter much; what DOES matter is my time. I think in this case, all other things being equal, I'd prefer a simple card swap and fast bring-up to running the risk of attempting a driver uninstall and re-install with completely different manufacturers' drivers. I've gotten burned on that before. I hate the way NVidia attempts to charge for their PureVideo codecs, though, but in my case I might not need them.

so you're willing to pay MORE for a card that doesn't suit your needs just because you're scared to uninstall an old driver and reinstall a new driver?
This can and will save u more tan $10 now, and in the long run. learn to do it!
1. download NEW driver
2. uninstall old driver
3. shut down pc
4. remove old video card
5. plug in new video card
6. turn on pc
7. install new driver

it really takes a total of 2 minutes extra time to uninstall and install

A 9600GT will work fine. I'm using one with no problems. Even a 8600GT will be more than enough. But you should still use the latest drivers available since they keep refining and adding new options for HD playback.
