Reply to Letter #6

Hi Xanis!

I appreciate the plan to send me a Rick Roll card. I was quite surprised to find out that you can buy pre-made rick roll card RIGHT HERE!. The attached picture had almost the same effect. Just to make you happy, I Rick Rolled myself just to make sure. I actually have the song on my mp3 player just for emergency Rick Rolling, but I have never had to resort to it yet.

I am rather glad that you did not spend too much on a recordable card. I feel bad enough that JohnCU spent about $9 on that other holiday card. I am pretty sure that the only holiday cards and letters I got this year were from you folks. I appreciate it since I have been kind of down lately. I think I am mostly over that now though, which is a relief. I kind of worked out a ?fix it? plan for myself over the break, but I have yet to implement it really. I am kind of reluctant to actually set it in motion though since the time with my family over the holiday season away from my usual routine has really seemed to have helped things.

I hope finals went well for you. I actually just graduated technically, but I still have to do student teaching until the end of January. I went in to career services today (which conveniently relocated recently to the same building where I work) to check out what else I need to accomplish before I am really done with what I need to have set up. Luckily I did not have any exams to do this semester either. My classes have been quite easy in the education department compared with the engineering department. I am pretty sure my last six semester GPA is going to be a 4.0. Too bad there are a couple years of engineering in front of that to bring it back down

I can understand about the length of the letter. Some of the ones I got before were quite lengthy indeed. It is hard to write a decent length letter to someone when you do not really know them. I think it would be easier for me to write these replies based on the material you guys send to me rather than coming up with something interesting for the actual letter. As for the spelling or grammar errors, do not worry about it. I am actually writing this in Microsoft Word before pasting it into ATOT just for kicks to avoid that sort of thing? not that I usually do this. Going back to length, this is almost a full page in Word but it is going to end up looking really short on the forum once I paste it in. Oh well

I hope you have a Happy New Year as well. As I was writing this I got invited to build a snow man tomorrow with one of my girlfriend?s friends (well I guess she?s my friend too). Last night we spent several hours playing n64 together and some other activities. With the snow that is falling tonight I hope that there will be good packing snow for my freshly made New Year?s Eve plans. Now if I can just convince / trick my girlfriend into watching ?The Thing? sometime during the winter I will be in good shape for the year.

Nice wintertime choice! I watched that when it first came out and had a few bad dreams afterwords. That was one scary movie for the time, but then Ive always been a fan of science fiction.

Snake Plissken was great in that movie. I heard he was dead though.

Kurt Russell is dead?

Rather than watching "The Thing", I ended up finally watching "An Inconvenient Truth" and then quite possibly the worst Russian musical I've ever seen.

The worst movie I've seen is Alien vs. Hunter, which I got on purpose just to have a definitive answer.

This is what I watched last night: Ivan Vasilevich menyaet professiyu. After watching it, I was trying to remember why I had that in my Netflix queue. I assumed it was one of my coworkers who recommended it, but I sent an e-mail to her about it and she said it wasn't her. I tried a quick search on AT to see if it was mentioned in a thread recently, but I did not get any useful results either.

I have no idea how that got into my queue. My gf picked it out by putting it in the "maybe" stack we were picking from. With a score of 8.3 on imdb, she told me that it must be better than "The Thing". I am baffled by this rating. I would have given it about a 2.5

"Shurik Timofeev builds a working model of a time machine. By accident, Ivan Bunsha, an apartment complex manager, and George Miloslavsky, a petty burglar, are transferred to the 16th century Moscow, while Tsar Ivan the Terrible goes into the year 1973."

That's just about all you need to know about this movie... except that it's also a musical. I can't believe I watched the whole thing. I was expecting something great to happen that I must have heard about earlier that caused me to want to put it in my queue. Oh well

Ok, I think I figured out why I put Ivan Vasilevich menyaet professiyu in my queue...

I was looking through the top rated "Sci-Fi" movies on imdb
http://www.imdb.com/chart/scifi
and it's at number 14 on the list. It must have been the highest one on the list that I hadn't seen. According to the user comments it used to be rated 8.5, which would have put it at number 5 or 6. I guess I have nobody to blame except myself.

To put this in perspective, here are a couple user comments from the movie:

Review 1

"All the humor in the movie was original at the time, and still is, but I guess not to everyone, especially residents of the US who are used to perverted humor and such.

I find it silly how a non Russian speaking person could rate this movie at all...

This movie is purely made for Russia and all the former USSR countries, and most of the Russian population have all seen it and love it!

A lot of phrases in the movie are commonly used everywhere in Russia to this day, and will be used for at least another century.

This film made Russian history.

I love it too!"

Review 2

"Hi!

As the title of the comment points this is one of the best Soviet comedies ever filmed. And that's is the reason for many people from other countries of the world not to get it's meaning. I would say that even modern day Russians - who have never lived in The Soviet Union, who have no idea what Iron Curtain or Warsaw Treaty Organization is will never understand and enjoy it in full. But anyone who is acquainted with Soviet reality will vote 10 of 10 - I am sure. So do not blame Americans or peoples from other countries for not getting Soviet comedies (those were great; and modern day Russian comedies is pure crap - I am sorry) - they were so very oriented to our former reality that are hard to get in modern days. My score is 20 of 10."

Review 3

"A fairly humorous mix of Mr Bean visual puns, pre-Perestroika Russian stereotypes, Benny Hill chases and a bit of caviar thrown in (black, red and eggplant)! I was expecting something very special from a film with such a high rating, but unless all the comedy in Russian jokes is lost in translation - which I don't believe - then the film was on a par with a romp Up-Pompeii. Now, don't get me wrong. I love Carry-On films, Benny Hill, Mr Bean, and dare I say it - Franky Howard. But to put this whimsical ditty up there as the fourth best Science Fiction film ever, with the greats of Star Wars and The Matrix and above Blade Runner and Alien leads me to believe that something is wrong! Ah yes! only 1,130 votes as compared to 135,273 for Blade Runner. As they say, there's lies, damn lies....... and I will let you finish the rest. The film clearly has a solid, committed core of devoted followers. Watch the film, but don't expect to be moved to philosophical pondering. More imported eggplant caviar anyone?"

In Soviet Russia....

I really like what you're doing for other members... sometimes we all need someone impartial to talk to, and from your responses, I'm sure you're an excellent teacher.

As long as ATOT doesn't mind that I'm totally unqualified to give any useful advice, then I'm glad to help

Hi Slackwarelinux.

I had assumed the string of mail had ended already, but I welcome your creative addition. I am fairly impressed that the postcard actually got to me seeing the state of the address on the card.

I tried to Google OHKOHCHI-SANSO to see if there was more information about it. Looks like a beautiful location.

Indeed I do ?liek? Mudkips. That was always the highlight of my time at the Milwaukee County Zoo.

Early in my time there, it was unclear whether Mudkip was a danger to others, but he seemed to get along great with our wolves. We kept him in there for quite a while and he was a big draw for the younger crowd.

Later on though, it seemed clear that he was fun loving and not dangerous to the general public. We decided that it was fine for Mudkip to roam the zoo throughout the day, just like the peacocks. He was kind enough to pose for this photo as well.
