ok I just put together my computer and here are the specs:

ECS K7S5A mobo
256 DDR ram
XP 1600+
WD 60.0 gb 7200rpm
Hercules MUSE XL sound
Geforce 2 64mb

and the problem is when i tried to use the onboard sound the volume was very low to an extent where u can barely hear it and a slight distortion here and tehre, so i thought i could solve it by buying a new sound card and disabling the onboard sound. so i bought a new sound card and installed it although it did resolve the volume issue, occasionally there is a distortion when too much sounds come in. is there any way to totally turn off the sound? i turned it off in the setup/bios but it does not seem to help. it seems to be conflicting with the onboard sound and it does not even make sense to me. i am not too much of a computer expert so any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks guys!

you didn't say what OS you're using!
suggest you look in device manager under sounds to see if you see more than 1 soundcard listed as I suspect you didn't uninstall the onboard sound drivers before you installed your new sound card!

Hmmm most of the best options have been tried, long shot but did you check in bios that midi port adress is off? I know on some boards that even when you disable onboard Sound that still remains on unless you disable it.

Try uninstalling all sound related devices, new and old. Shutdown your computer. Remove the sound card. Boot up and go into the BIOS. Disable onboard sound and the onboard MIDI port. Boot into Windows with no sound. Shut down your computer. Install the sound card of your choice. Install the latest drivers for all devices detected. See if that will help. It's like doing a fresh install.

Try checking the documentation for your motherboard. I had same problem with different board, k7asa, when I upgraded to WinXP. Had to change a jumper setting to disable onboard sound.

sounds crazy, did you try some other speakers or headphones? Also make sure that wave volume is maxed out and your headphones are muted ! sorry if you already knew this although sometimes we all look past the obvious!

I may be wrong, but it sounds like your output volume is too high from the souncard to the speakers.... I would run it at about 50%, hopefully that helps
