Can anyone help me with this OS problem?

I just setup up Windows 2K on my computer after giving up on Windows XP (never could get it to work correctly, etc). After the initial set up it restarts to go into Windows. I get the bottom bar starting up Windows (looks like it's in DOS), then I get the splash screen also starting Windows but as soon as the blue bar gets across to the end the computer restarts itself. I have a AMD XP 1700+ and was wondering if that is the problem, maybe one of my other cards, or has my setup of Windows been corrupted and I need to redo it again? Thanks for anyhelp anyone can give me.
My Setup:
AMD XP 1700+
IWILL XP333
ATI Radeon 7500
512MB DDR PC2100
40 GB Maxtor
D-Link PCI NIC
Generic FireWire PCI card

Interesting that you've had problems with XP to begin with??? Not sure what was happening there, but in my experience, it's always been very problem free (knock on wood).

How many attempts have you had at installing Win2k? That's another OS that I've enjoyed installing because of the simplicity and lack of any problems. If you've only installed it once, I would recommend installing it again. The next time though, prior to installation, I'd suggest booting up with a boot disk, deleting all partitions, recreating them, and then do a complete format. Once the format is done, then reboot with your Win2k installation disks. Good luck

I had an full version found on one of the great deals here, but I have had nothing but trouble with use after the first time. The initial setup I had was a PIII 500 which worked fine, as soon as I upgraded to a full AMD XP system I had to reload and then the problems began. I can't install Netscape 4.79 because I don't have enough space in my temp directory and over a period of serveral weeks my system develops more and more problems until it stops working altogether (shortest time was one month, longest a little over two). Anytime I load a new install of XP no matter how many different CDs I use I also always get errors when the install program copies the CD files over to the hard drive. That's why I finally gave up on XP.
I installed 2K on my laptop which is the first OS to last over 3 months in any of my systems before reformat since Windows 95 so I decided to stick it on my main system. I also always reformat and re-partition before install just to keep everything clean.

Yes a clean format.
Now here's the new problem. I got it to work on a new and clean install, but it will only work with my CPU at 1331+, not 1700+. Now if I force the motherboard to recognize the processor at 1700+ then it will still continue to restart on me. I am now worried about the motherboard or the CPU.

...i have seen many times that if the trend virus is enabled in the bios it creates all kinds of trouble when ya try to get an os on the hdd, i would also try taking one of your ram chips out before an install..also..im not familiar with the iwill333...but i have seen plenty of asus boards that state amd xp ready but still needed to be flashed to get anything above 1.6 recognised properly
here is what i would do (for what its worth )
remove any card/device not neccesary to run your pc, things like the nic, sound card, etc
use one stick of ram
do a fdisk and remove all partions
power off without exiting fdisk
boot back up with your floopy/s
do the partition thing and format and do your install
if ya get this far start adding your cards and stuff one at a time till done
its hard to say whats really wrong without more info, like does scandisk detect bad sectors etc...coz one symptom of a bad drive is things getting progressively worse over time
hope you get it all worked out

I doubt it's a virus. Restarts are more likely due to an underpowered PSU or bad RAM. What's the rating of the PSU in there? What are your voltages, particularly the 5V and 12V rails? Do you have more than one stick of RAM? What RAM?

Shouldn't be the PS, it's one of those Directron Deals, a Silent TT 320W PS which is rather new. I'm not sure about the voltages, never looked at those. The RAM is two sticks 256 MB Centron DDR, one 256MB Muskin Basic (I know I only said I had 512 before, but I forgot I had another stick in there ) all PC2100.

I don't believe there are bad sectors on the drive as I always check for those. I should go and flash the motherboard, but almost killed a board before so I'm very hesitant to do it now, oh well at least I have a back up computer.

Thanks for all the advice, any more would be helpful!
