Piano, for years. You need a good teacher, and willingness to really work at it. You'll learn how to read and write music (hopefully) and should be able to jump over to other instruments.
I played the clarinet and saxophone in high school about 6 years ago. I wasn't the greatest at the time but could probably get out a few notes now if I tried.
Trombone, baritone, and tuba. Actually played at carnegie Hall once (trombone). I also am a scratch DJ (just for fun now as I have another career) if you consider the tables an instrument.
Banjo (bluegrass style) and guitar (finger picking, flat/cross picking, blues, rhythm) very well. I can also play the mandolin, bodhran, spoons, drums, piano, bass, and ukulele, but not as well as the banjo and guitar.
All the brass instruments except trombone, don't know how that one got by me. I started out majoring in Music Theory in college, but was convinced that it wasn't a practical major for employment.
