Look At This Picture

I am thinking that it is a virus, I have tried Fdisk`ing the Master Boot Record, and ran about 5 different virus scanners, and everything came up clean. Also, I have noticed that I am missing drive space, I had 15 gigs, then it dropped to 7, I didn't download or install anything. I tried running a scandisk/defrag from dos, it didn't come up with anything either.... weird... does anyone know what is going on? The total conv. memory is always suppose to be 640 isn't it? Plus the upper and reserved aren't suppose to be zero are they?

I've got the same thing when I type in "mem" at the DOS c:\ prompt and nothing funny going on here that I know of.

Every computer I have ever owned or used never looked like that, it always had 640k total memory too.. I think it is just weird.. I'm not sure if it is a virus or not...

I have the exact same thing as well. I think it's normal. WinME does some funky stuff to DOS.

I've seen this on every system from win95 and up
win3.1 was ok, as was 3.11, 3.0 and just plain dos
the reason upper and reserved are at zero are because you don't have himem or emm386 loaded in your config sys with the proper switches turned on. Don't know what those memories really do, but you had to have them free for some games back in the day (wing commander)

Conventional should be 640 I don't know if it is hardware or software, I have no idea about it. But that was important for games too. You had to manually load sound drivers in dos, as well as mouse support and use a version of mscdex that didn't use too much conv. mem so you could play games like dragon(s) lore which required you to play in dos, and use the cd. It took like 620k of conv mem!! Hard to free up

as for your extended mem, 65535k is how much you have, 64 meg (but in 1024k sections making 65535k)
no idea why used amound is ? and free is so big, as someone smrter than me

I am not really concerned about the memory, its not like it is going to slow my computer down or anything. I was just under the impression that if you have under 640k total memory, there is something loaded into it such as a virus..

You probably have to go into config.sys and manually add those old commands that put "stuff" in upper memory, etc.

-----------

This is what I added - thankfully I've long since forgotten what it all means:

device=c:\windows\himem.sys
device=c:\windows\emm386.exe noems
dos=high
dos=umb

-----------

This is what I show, at the moment:

Memory Type Total Used Free
---------------- -------- -------- --------
Conventional 640K 31K 609K
Upper 123K 123K 0K
Reserved 0K 0K 0K
Extended (XMS) 65,349K ? 237,984K
---------------- -------- -------- --------
Total memory 66,112K ? 238,593K

Total under 1 MB 763K 154K 609K

Largest executable program size 609K (623,104 bytes)
Largest free upper memory block 0K (0 bytes)
MS-DOS is resident in the high memory area.
