Can crossover cable work with a hub/swich/router?

I know that crossover cable allows you to connect 2 computers without a hub but I was wondering if it also works as straight cable to connect to a hub if I needed to. I ask because I'm wondering if I have to bring both a crossover cable and straight cable along with my laptop for either situtation or if i can just bring the crossover and use it as a straight

crossover is only for PC to PC connections, and odd switch to switch connections where you use a LAN port rather than the uplink port

not "Odd swtich to switch" connections, but for normal switch to switch. All cisco's require a crossover. It's the standard. Some devices offer "auto detection" to change the port to "crossed over".

find a small adapter, I have one that is male/female, and is just a bit larger then an rj45 connector.

I didn't mean "odd switch" I just meant sometimes switches do not have an uplink port, in which case you would use a crossover cable. If you are connecting two switches that both have an uplink port, you would use a patch cable.

Uplink port = patch cable

No uplink port = crossover cable into LAN port

Are you saying all cisco switches do not have uplink ports?

I haven't seen many, but I usually use catalyst 2900 series, and some 3500 series.

Alot, perhaps most, budget switches these days are auto MDI/MDX. You could use a straight or X-over cable if at least one of the switches is.

There are a number of Cisco switche models that don't have uplinks.. however, very seldom does that matter. 2900, 3500, 2950, 2970, 3750....

Even on some of the older models (2900 and 3500) that have model with uplink ports, you still have to use a cross over.. The safe rule is to always use a cross over for switch to switch, regardless of port.. However, if you are lucky enough to have switches with MDIX then you can likely get away with straight through cables at times.

a good rule of thumb is that crossover is needed for connecting like devices (Switch to switch, router to router, pc to pc) and stright is for non like devices (switch to router, pc to switch). The exception of this is hub to switch, as they are the "same" type of device (as this rule of thumb goes)
