Easiest is just to try it. Nothing will be damaged. The most you might have to do is set the memory settings in the BIOS manually rather than allowing it to be automatically detected.
. Most Intel chipsets support ECC anyway. It's a mystery to me why to mobo mfr's don't provide the function to their customers. I know that I don't buy high end mobos w/o ECC support.
. If anyone is looking for a good Socket A mobo w/ ECC support, here ya go: Tyan Trinity S2495AN/ANRS. (this one has support for Registered memory too - probably make the core of a very nice server). AFAIK, there are no SiS, ALi, or Nvidia based Socket-A chipsets that support ECC, only VIA for Socket-A and Intel for Intel CPUs.
