Can Gmail be set as default mail client?

Does anyone know if Gmail can be set as the Default Mail Client on the Programs Tab under Internet Options?

Basically, we need Gmail to launch when a program wants to send email.

in a web browser? i don't think so. i have tried, but i can't figure anything out. i suppose you could use pop w/ outlook, but that would kinda defeat the purpose of the massive storage. i just have to suck it up.

Gmail can't be used through Outlook, can it?

I know some web based items can be set as default, but a program needs to be run to let them be added to the list (in the same way that hotmail can be used).

Why not use Thunderbird from Mozilla? I'm using that now on my laptop. Gmail provides a nice tutorial on how to set up your account and just option to leave the messages on the server. Yes, you will have the messages in 2 locations (on your computer and on Gmail) but that's a good thing in case you ever need to access them remotely from another computer or if your system were to unfortunately crash. It's not as heavy on resources as Outlook (or so it seems IMO) and it's very quick to load and easy to use. I don't think you can default a browser-based email client as a default because of the login idea. Outlook Express (or it's equal) will usually attempt to load if you click an email link.

Yes, Gmail can be used through Outlook or any Email client. You need to enable POP3 access in the settings. Read the FAQ.

Download gmail notifier and during the installation it will ask if you want gmail to be your default email program.

How do I make Gmail my default mail application?

You can designate Gmail as your default mailto handler. This means that when you click on any hyperlinked email address, a Gmail compose window opens so you can send a message to that address, from Gmail.

This feature is turned off by default. To turn this feature on after downloading the Notifier:

1. Choose ?I Agree? to the License Agreement
2. Check the ?Use for outgoing mail? box and click ?Next.?
3. Click ?Install.?

To change this setting, you will need to download the Notifier again and make your change on the ?Choose Components? screen.
