Can I crossfire these two cards?

Pretty sure the answer is yes, but just want to be sure..

I have this card - An AT 7870

I'm thinking I'd like to Crossfire it with this 7850:

Mainly because that 7850 for $110 after rebate seems like a cheap way to get some easy power. I'd be loosing out on some Stream Processors by not getting a second 7870, but I'd be saving about $80, and I think I'd save that towards getting the NEXT generation of video card down the road.

Solid plan? Fools errand? Won't work?

Thanks for any advice. If it matters, I currently play silly games like SWTOR and WoW. Planning on trying out EQ Next when it comes out sometime next year.

It should work well. (I'm unsure which games work/don't with frame pacing though)

Overclock the 7850 slightly and you'll have the equivalent of 7870 crossfire.

It will work but 7870 will get downgraded to 7850 specs so only 1024 cores will be active in both cards. Clocks won't change tough. I had 6990 crossfired with two 6950.

This is wrong. It will work, it will simply limit the higher spec'ed card to the specs of the lower card.

I believe the 7870 and the 7850 Technically have the same GPU, but different clock speeds.

They have to have the same physical GPU, true. However, they actually do have the same psysical GPU, so it turns into 7850 CF

Cores aren't deactivated when you crossfire 2 different cards.

This. Both will work to full potential with his resulting performance falling inline between 2 7850s and 2 7870s.
