I mean LEGIT methods to do this. I will be flying on a 23hr non-stop flight in a few weeks without any wifi/internet access. I want to d/l some movies (or tv shows) to my Windows laptop for offline watching. I looked online and the few places where it SEEMS possible only do it on ipad/iphone/android devices.

I found a site that will let you download stuff from you tube, but not really looking for that. I checked into Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Comcast Xfinity Go and nothing. Nada.

So, what are my options?

Can't you download rented & bought media from Apple to a Windows machine in iTunes?

Edit: beaten to it.

Is iTunes the only service that allows this? I'm surprised we got a whole page of "it's impossible!"

I'm pretty sure Vudu works in a similar way. Amazon Prime Video allows for offline viewing but I have never tried it so there might be restrictions. My Tivo allows me to download and view recordings offline.

I have been traveling a lot this year, and honestly the video selections available through the in flight entertainment systems have been good enough that I don't worry about taking movies on my iPad. Some of the selections aren't even available for rent or purchase yet.

Not sure how current and legal this is.

Download Netflix movies, watch Hulu shows ad-free, and so much more
The recording feature in PlayOn Plus lets you download streaming shows and movies from Netflix, Hulu (Hulu subscription not required), HBO GO, HBO NOW,
Amazon Video, Fox, NBC, CBS, ABC, Comedy Central, and pretty much any streaming site so you can watch offline.

Don’t have time to watch a show or movie before it leaves Netflix or another streaming site? Just find it in the PlayOn dashboard, then click on "record".
Watch recordings on your TV, or on the go on your laptop, tablet, or mobile device — even when you don't have an internet connection.

I thought Google Play allowed you to dl purchased movies to your device to watch offline. Probably requires wifi for a verification but IDK. I would just check the bargain bins at Walmart and see what they have, use MakeMKV as someone suggested and just put them on the laptop or flashdrive.

They do, but only to an Android device.

I don't think Google Movies works on PC.

Amazon Prime Video allows you to download to a Tablet of Phone (not a PC)

iTunes allows you to rent video, so you can always try that - they are downloads, and I believe you can watch them on your PC/Mac.

If it were me I'd probably bring some DVD's. I have a ton of them.
I don't have any DVD's to copy.
Don't know where you are but my town's library has thousands of DVDs I can borrow for free for 3 weeks. And if nobody else has a hold on it I can renew the checkout for one additional 3 week period.

Gotta pick it up and return in person but everything else, including lookup, placing holds, I can do online.

Actually and technically ripping DVDs you own is against the law (a law called the DMCA). It has never been enforced though.
That is just sick sick sick. Most of my DVDs have several subtitle languages. If I turn on subtitles I have to step through each of the others to reach "Off." A ripped DVD (e.g. DVDShrink rips) allow me to just include the English subtitle, problem solved.

I don't think ripping a DVD violates DMCA, it would be bypassing CSS protection that is the problem. Some DVDs have it and some don't.

Fair use is in the DMCA and it allows copying things like that. Which is why you can make backup copies of VHS and that was fought out in courts. Same part of the law that allows making backup copies of VHS cassettes that was put to the test in a court is what allows you to make backup copies of your DVD's and Blurays. Nothing about the law stipulates what the copy media must be either.

Now the real rule of the DMCA is circumvention of DRM, which is on most DVD's and Blurays. Circumventing CRM that prevents copying is illegal in the US. Unless you are circumventing said DRM for educational or creative purposes. There are plenty of exceptions to that rule which is why it's never enforced. Especially if you never actually share the content you personally backed-up.

The thing is, the DMCA legally allows people to do things like make parodies of other's works for example. This is what Weird Al Yankovich does. He does ask for permission, but legally he doesn't have to. He also honors the permissions he is granted or not after he asked for it. Again he is legally not forced to. So legally he can rip a music CD and turn the music he rips off into a parody and even resell that parody for distribution and that is ALL LEGAL. Of course most music CD's don't have DRM on them either so you arent' circumventing that DRM.

Again, the intent of why you are circumventing the DRM is the real kicker. If you circumvent for personal educational and backup reasons then it is still legal to do so. If you are circumventing to share to others then it is certainly not. There are several exceptions made by the Librarian of Congress to the DMCA, although most of it hasn't been tested in court. Still it's nice to know the exceptions.

See, recorded media again is technically legal if you paid for it already and aren't going to share the copied media with others. It's one of those things. You can record a NFL football game that is distributed over the air and rewatch it later legally. Why? The initial distribution is already paid for by commercials. With Netflix, if you are recording the stream off your own account, then you've already paid for access to the media in question. Again, others haven't paid for such access and thus you can't share it with others.

Do you have Windows 10 (maybe 8 also). You can rent/buy movies/TV from the Windows movie & tv app.

Not 100% sure you can watch offline, but it would pretty stupid if you couldn't (but then again this is ms we are talking about).

Verified you can download purchased movies, not sure about rentals, probably.

I just looked through my collection and it seems they're mostly all mobile-only downloads.

imho, you should look into downloading "illegally" films which are in the public domain, thus no copyright attached, meaning you can have the rip without having any legal problems.

or do what dullard said. go to any used-dvd store and buy a handful of films from the $2 bin.

Thanks for all the replies, but 99% certain I won't buy/rent dvds>rip before getting on the flight. But perhaps.

There is a BUNCH of stuff on youtube that I will save. It's pretty much endless. Hey, how many 4hr long videos can you find about the Battle of Stalingrad, a LOT. This is the site I found that will copy youtube vids locally: http://keepvid.com/

Buy the DVD and download the movie rip/encoding via torrent. This should keep you in compliance with the law to nearly the same degree that you'd be in compliance if you ripped it yourself.
