can i get a recommendation on a digital camera?

looking for something inexpensive, nothing serious. just need something to take pictures of me and my friends at school. optical zoom would be a plus.

check out the dell deals on the hot deals forum. and check out dpreview.com for digital camera reviews. i'd get the canon s400 if i didn't have a digital camera now. it looks really nice for size and 4Mpixels. 3x optical zoom.

Canon S230. Very small and has 3mp, but only 2x optical zoom. not that expensive either if you find the right deal. The Canon A70 would be the best for the money but those are hard to find now because Canon is on back order for those cameras at the moment.

I would stick with Nikon or Canon, and if you can afford it get at least 2 megapixels. But if you just want the pictures for the screen than 1 megapixel (640x480) is fine.

It works out like this for quality prints
1. 4X6 and 5x7 prints - 2 or more megapixels
2. 8x10 prints - 3-4 or more megapixels
3. 35mm quality - 6 or more megapixels

It has 3x optical zoom and uses compact flash. Does not have a view finder so you have to use the LCD screen as the view finder.

there is a Wolf Camera (same operation as ritz?) right by my house with this same deal. think i might go check it out. thanks.

keep in mind what you want to do with your pics... if you want to print 8x10 you need to get at least 3MP; a 2MP will give you a 4x6 or 5x7. For just posting pics on the web, anything will do. My main camera is a 4MP Sony with Zeiss lens (s85) and it gives me 8x10 prints as good as my SLR's used to. Love it!
I've sold a lot of the Fuji 2650 and never had one returned, it's a decent camera. Personally I think the Nikon2500 is a piece of junk, they were always breaking on us, very high return rate.

The 2650 is a really really good camera for just taking photos of friends and family. I had one but found out it was a refurb so I returned it. Otherwise I would've kept it and it would've fulfilled my needs.

Right now I have a Sony DSC-V1 5 mp camera. It's an awesome piece of work.

The 2650 gets my vote. Also try checking out dpreview.com like others have said. He usually does really good reviews on digi cams.

A suggestion, get a 256 MB memory card. The 16 MB cards are inadequate,

The Canon A70 is an excellent camera however if you want something cheaper and don`t mind having 2MP rating then the Canon A60 is another fine choice.

My recommendation goes to the Powershot A70 also. I just picked one up yesterday at a local CompUSA. I even started a thread about how they are still so hard to find after being out for a few months. It's an awesome camera for the money, and the best you will find in that pricerange.

As was stated in the post above, the A60 is very nice also for a 2mp camera. I had that one for a week and it was great, and took very nice pictures. I just decided to take it back and get the 3mp since the A70 was only $50 more, I figured WTH.

I am in college and have had a lot of fun with my little 2mb elph. Let me give you something to look for. Size is VERRY important. Dont get something too big, you want it to fit in ur pocket when you go out for the night.

ALSO!! I wish my cannon could take pictures faster. After taking a picture you have to wait for it to 'get ready' to take another. THat is unacceptable when you are getting someone at a bar or whatever. You want it to take pictures fast. Trust me.

I would agree with all those who recommended the Nikon. The picture qualities are unmatched for their class. I'm seen people complaining that they develop hot spots over time (including the one I own that just started to get them at 3 years old), but a good service plan should help. The quality is phenomenal.
