Can I make a Pentium 200MMX run like a Pentium 200 Classic? **More help needed**

Here's my situation...

I have a motherboard that I was upgrading for a friend. I read that it accepts upto a Pentium 200, but it will only accept a Pentium 166MMX. Can I set the board up to power a Pentium 200 Classic and have it run the 200MMX CPU that I have? Will setting it up this way damage the core of the CPU?

As far as the motherboard is concerned, the only difference between a Pentium Classic and a Pentium MMX is the dual plane voltages. If it accepts a Pentium 166MMX, it will accept a Pentium 200MMX.

Simply set the jumper for a P55C, and then set the multiplier jumpers to what it has for the Pentium 200 Classic.

what he said. just make sure you set the jumper for p55c or I believe you'll be severely overvolting the p200mmx

That's exactly what I've done, but it always recognizes the CPU as a 166MMX. Later I found that some specs that say it will accept upto a 200 Classic and 166MMX. The board is a Gigabyte GA-586ATS.

There isn't a GA-586ATS model. The closest is the 586ALS, or ATV, or ATX.

If this motherboard has dipswitches, settings for the 586ATV, for the 6 dipswitches, 1 to 6, for the 200MMX is

OFF ON ON OFF ON OFF

For the 586ATX model with 8 dipswitches, 1 to 8, for the 200MMX is

OFF OFF ON OFF OFF OFF ON OFF

It's possible the BIOS doesn't properly recognize the CPU clock speed, but otherwise works fine. Check the clock speed from within windows.
