Total Price: $3,209.41

I am waiting for Corsair XPERT memory to come out, and I need suggestions on a good gaming LCD. Most of all, I want to keep liquid cooling, but I need to reduce the price. Any ideas?

The PCP&C SLI is regularly priced 239.99. Why are you paying an extra 79 bucks? For colored sleeves and connectors? If that's worth to you, fine, but I'd say just get the plain black one (which IMHO, looks badass as it is)

Skip the Power Supply Cooling fan. You don't need it. Trust me. I have a 510-SLI as well. The temps are fine.

I see you're going with a windowed case. I ended up getting the Silverstone TJ03 for 250, and I like it. No window, but then you don't have to worry about people looking at your non-colored PSU wires. Not to mention it has 6 external 5.25 bays, 6 internal 3.5 bays, and is roomy as hell. And it looks clean.

Again, IMHO, the Asus A8N-SLI deluxe looks like a better option at a glance, with 1 more of each PCI and PCIx1 slots and the $100 cheaper cost (roughly). That's what I ended up getting, and again, I like it.

Looks like the watercooled proc is overkill. Up to 300w cooling? I don't think you'll need that with a 3200+. In fact, I'm almost positive. Get a Zalman 7000 ALCU ($35) instead, they even have one with a blue LED in the fan for 2 bucks more, and it looks pretty damn cool. And it's quiet. Not that you'll hear it over the PCP&C, though.

Thermal Paste: Get AS5 (Arctic Silver 5). It's cheaper and better. 'nuff said.

XFX 6800 GT? I thought about getting one of those, and actually put an order through with chumbo. However, I cancelled it (it was back-ordered) once I read the horror stories of XFX's customer service. I would advise going with the BFG 6800 GT OC, if you can find it. Current retail is about $400, and it's overclocked to start with. Not to mention lifetime warranty (even though we all know it'll be obsolete in less than a year, and looked at in horror and disgust in about 5 years) But definately avoid XFX if you can. BFG or eVGA all the way.

Get an OEM Raptor, if you really want one. But get one. Raid 0 in two drives has no noticable performance gains for regular desktop/gaming use. But a much higher chance of data loss. The newegg link posted earlier is probably one of the cheapest, about 175 after tax and shipping and rebate.

Ditch the hard drive cooling. You're not gonna need it.

Skip the plextor and go with the NEC 3520a. It's fast, it's dependable, and it's almost $100 less.

Forget the logitech bluetooth, there's too many bugs in that particular bluetooth keyboard. In fact, skip bluetooth altogether on the keyboard and mouse, unless you're gonna be ridiculously far away from your computer. The regular cordless MX Duo with the MX 700 bundled mouse is a much better option, and it's 80 bucks cheaper.

Get some better speakers! The logitech 5500s, or the Klipsch Promedia Ultra 5.1s (I have the latter and they sound awesome. I also have the accompanying monster cable wiring and matching stands) But that means spending more money. Your choice.

XP 64? $400? Are you insane? You shouldn't be spending even close to that much on an OS. Get an OEM version at ZZF or Monarch, or SOMEONE. OEM Win XP Pro, though. You're not going to get a huge benefit from running a 64 bit OS right now anyways, there's not enough hardware/software support yet, as the OS hasn't taken off yet.

PC-cillin is a decent anti-virus, but I'd recommend skipping it in favor of grisoft's free AVG 7.0 Free Edition. It's the same or better, and you don't have to pay for it. Ever. Ever ever ever ever ever.

As long as we're talking about PC protection and free-ness, also pick up Spybot Search and Destroy, Spywareblaster, and the latest version of Ad-Aware, which are all also free as well. I'd also recommend picking up a copy of Webroot's SpySweeper, as it's certainly demonstrated its usefulness to me. That's an extra 30 bucks though. Or 20 less. Depends on how you look at it.

Total savings if you go by my recommendations, and do not spend any MORE:

1044

Yes. That's a good thousand dollars of savings.

Oh, and here's a free tip: Avoid buying directly from the manufacturer unless they're selling it for less than MSRP (which, chances are, they're not) Often times they'll charge more than most retailers, and you can save money by shopping around. Most retailers charge less than MSRP, I've noticed. Here's a few good ones:

www.chumbo.com (free fedex two-day shipping! Awesomeness)
www.newegg.com (but be careful, you'll probably have to pay tax, and definately shipping)
www.zipzoomfly.com (Also 2-day fedex shipping. Some items are ludicrously expensive, some are cheap. Just look around)
www.monarchcomputer.com

I got all my parts from the above websites (and some random cables and adapters from fry's)

When in doubt about whether or not a price is fair, froogle it.
www.froogle.com

Froogle is your friend. Froogle saved me hundreds of dollars. Froogle can help you too. Really.

And last but not least... I am not an authority on anything! But I DID just build a new computer, and I spent about 2000 on it, so I figure you can do the same. I also did tons of research. Probably not enough, but tons. I cannot stress enough the importance of research, ESPECIALLY when you're ready to drop 3 Gs on a system.

Good luck!

Also if you get XP Pro OEM regular right now you can trade it in later for a full version of XP-64 when released.

OCing with a PC Power and Cooling PSU? Oh, they're nice but to just throw it away on a few benchies. Sad.

1. Quickest thing to do to half the price is give up the water cooling idea. All that work for a little gain that a pin hole leak can destroy it all, isn't worth it for a few 100mhz.
2. Second is the keyboard, a $5 or $22 would do (heck, find an old IBM PS/2 keyboard if you want the best one made).
3. Plextor doesn't offer much advantage these days, when even if a LiteOn fails, it costs about the same as a Plextor. LiteOn gives you 2 for the price of one...and that's better insurance.
4. One Raptor drive.

Get rid of all of the nickel and dime stuff, like the uv reactive dye and HDD coolers. 86 the windows 64 in favor of 32 bit since there are no programs that can run on xp64. Get rid of the water cooling and save $300-500. Air cooling is cheaper, more reliable, and wont ruin your $3,000 computer when it decides to leak while you are sleeping.

This is true! I have my old original one from a 386 SX 16MHz machine (2 MB RAM). It was used daily for years, and years, even on newer computers.

I still have it, and it works great... Only thing, it's quite a noisy keyboard.

I have that case, (except its without the lil 10 year old boy blue stuff on the front and the lame crap ontop that doent even look like it belongs) and it is a good case. Solid (plastic) well built. Not worth more than $80. If you but that for more than $100 I will shoot you. If you want t spend $~250 on a case dont go for the girlscout stuff, go for something QUALITY and mature like a good Lain Li or Silverstone. I reccomend the silverstone. Big heavy doors. Feels like a mans case.

First off.....

Get the BFG 6800 GT OC from Best Buy, I hate Best Buy but it's 379.99, alot cheaper, lifetime warranty, and its default core is 20Mhz higher. Right now newegg and the sort are milking the fact they have been hard to keep in stock. If you want low latency memory go with Crucial Ballistix, fastest memory Ive found for the price, my PC3200 easily hits 250 2-2-2.

And OEM Windows will save you alot.

If you want everything to be top of the line, you can't work with a budget. Can't have the best of both worlds

Power Supply Cooling: Antec 92mm, 3 pin, BB Fan $11.99 Unnecessary....
Case: Koolance PC2-650BK $239.99 Consider a nice Lian Li instead
Case Cooling: Antec 80mm Green UV Fan $7.95 x 4 = $31.80 You do not need 22ty billion fans in your case.
UV Liquid Additive: Xoxide Green UV Dye $9.99 Go ahead if you must have all the UV crap...
Motherboard: DFI LANParty UT nF4 SLI-D $299.00 IMO, SLI probably won't be worth it in the long run, so save money and get a Neo4 Platinum (no SLI).
Motherboard Cooling: Koolance GPU-180-V06 MB $37.99 Give me a break...
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ $199.99 Good; expect at least 2.6GHz on air
Processor Cooling: Thermalright XP-120 with 120mm fan of your choice. This would be the absolute best in air cooling. To save a little, go for an XP-90 + 92mm fan or a Zalman 7000 or 7700 AlCu series.
Processor Thermal Paste: Cooler Master HTK-002 High Performance Thermal Compund $10.99
Video Card: XFX NVIDIA GeForce 6800GT $445.00 I think I saw a PCIe 6800GT for $425 the other day on Newegg....
Video Card Cooling: Koolance VID-NV2-LO6 VID $79.99 If you decide to replacethe stock HSF with better and quieter air cooling, go for an NV Silencer
Hard Drives: Western Digital Raptor 74 GB $239.99 x 2 = $479.98 Try using one Raptor for OS/apps, and a larger 7200RPM/8MB drive for additional storage, if you can justify the extra expense for Raptors in the first place.
Hard Drive Cooling: Give me a break.
Memory: 2x512MB Corsair Value Select PC3200. Seriously. Check Zebo's tests in the CPU/OC forum.
Optical Drive: Plextor PX-716SA $149.00 NEC 3520A is a much better value
Mouse & Keyboard: Logitech Cordless Desktop MX for Bluetooth $179.95 OVERKILL.
Speakers: Logitech X-530 $79.95 With savings, you may be able to get something nicer, if you want.
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional 64-bit Edition $387.95 Get XP Home for now
Security: Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security $49.95 use free stuff like AntiVir and Kerio; it works plenty fine for anyone
Display: Good gaming LCDs would probably include the Dell 2001FP and 2005FPW, and various Samsung models, among others.

My two cents.

I have the BFG 6800GToc... Hard flashed to 400, 1.1. It can clock higher, but I'm happy at ultra speeds.

The crucial Ballistix are sweet RAM I have the PC4000 version. I'm not sure how you're getting 2-2-2 @ 250... I can run 2.5-2-2-8 1T @ 250, and 260.

For that extra price from pc-performance, if they do the sleeving the warranty is still good for 5 years. If a modder does it at home, warranty is void. It's fine on a $80 PSU, but not on one costing over $200.

Get it sleeved by them, they got PC Power and Cooling's approval as a sleeve modder with FULL 5 year warranty.

Almost $400 for Windows 64-bit?

They're going to allow people to upgrade from XP Pro to that for free, and its not out yet, so there's not point in doint that.

!!Clickery, click!!

It's what I call a tank board, true industrial strength. I think it can even be thrown against a wall (ah, LAN party anyone??) and survive intact. Freaking thing must weight 5lbs.

There's a shop in Atlanta that specializes in selling and repairing them (also have genuine IBM different keycaps too) for just $20 -- don't have the link, but it can be found.

20 years later the letters still don't rub off. They just don't make them like they used too.

1984 to 86 models were the good ones, folks. Neat thing, everyone had a birthdate too, you'll know when your baby was born.

Ironically I would actually pay for one of those keyboards. I have the old keyboard socket with the 5 pin connector for my 8088 machine and I just love the sound the keyboard makes when you type, I feel like I'm actually typing something. I like noisy keyboards and I think they are fun to have, it's really just a matter of opinion I guess.. If I could get LED lights in one of those so I could see the keyboard when the lights are off, that would be sweet.

That system is so ridiculous I don't even know where to start. Looks like he's just trying to waste everybody's time; might as well make a post saying "I'm looking at Ferraris, but I only wanted to spend $15,000 on a car!" The only answer is, "get a clue."

Even if cost were no option, nobody would spend that kind of money on XP 64-bit, and $50 fpr PC-cillin? I'm sure you'd be better off turning on Windows Update and downloading AdAware/Spybot/Bazooka (and that new free MS spyware thingy).

Yea i understand this, but you can oc a fx-55 higher then a 3000 or 3200... yea there is a major gap in price (cant argue with numbers!) and whats 500 dollars more... lol... (ok 1/3 of a big Assd monitor!!)

i don;t even think i considered a 180 dollar keyboard... now water cooling for my second rig sounds cool... (damn even that phase cooling wasnt that bad!)
