Why wouldn't you want a single 6600GT!?!? Its faster than every single last gen card!!

If he was going to go with 2x 6600GT's right now that would be stupid. Then the advice would be go with a single 6800GT for less money greater performance and an open PCI-E x16 slot so you can SLI later.

Zebo, that monitoy seems a little slow for gaming...do you have it? It seems like 25ms response would be too slow for games. I've heard good things about the ViewSonic VP711B-2 17-inch monitor. Response is listed at 8ms, which is pretty much guaranteed to be fast enough for anyone. Sure, it's only a 6-bit panel, but I think response time is more important than 8-bit color.

Nice setup Zebo. I was trying to at least keep him in the same chipset, but that will be faster.... future proofm, not as much but still very nice.

That monitor is way better than the Viewsonic. Samsung and Dell i would say make THE BEST LCD's right now. 25ms although it is a bit slow should be fine. You want 8bit color!

eh where to start. first off why are you buying everything from the manufacturer? go to newegg.com. second you dont need a 150 dollar keyboard. you can get a good combo for 35 bucks. you dont need the 64 bit windows. the performance wouldnt be at all noticible. you dont need that expensive of a case or psu. you can get an ocz modstream with pci express native for 113 bucks and a thermaltake tsunami for 85 dollars and its a much better case. your just wasting your money and at the lan partys you wont look like the guy with the fantastic pc. youll look like the moron who wasted his money on needless expenses

Yes I have the 3000 + Chaintech combo overclcoked to 2650. If just as fast as 939..(indecerable from setup below w/o using testing software) 2800 is same chip, and same OC if he gets AX core.

As far as monitor??? I don't really like LCD's but that one reviewed well, so meh. I'd get a 22" CRT Like NEC 2141.. Pick whatever, still under $1500.

resStealth, next time, read the whole thing before posting. Zebo, thanks alot for posting on this, I have heard alot about you! I like your specs, but do you think you could change it to incorporate PCI-Express, because I kinda wanted it to last awhile. Thanks!

Zebo, that's a fine setup except for the motherboard. I think it's being overcharged. A PCI-E board from the same manufacturor would actually cost less.

For PCIe, you change the board, CPU, and video card.

Chaintech VNF4/Ultra ($130)
Retail 3000 Winchester ($160)
PCIe 6800GT ($440)

That's the best I've come up with; you're looking at $200 in extra expense unless you go with the 6600GT for now.

Chinoman: That $190 is for both the board and CPU. The board itself is usually only $65-75.

Trying to stay PCI-E right now is not worth it. AGP will be around for another 3 years at least. Just get the Nforce 3 board, it will awesome and you will save money (but get a faster system, albeit a little less future proof but still)

Perhaps an excellent question is: "How often do you upgrade your computer?"

Stash that viewsonic is same back panel as BeqQ http://graphics.tomshardware.c.../20041015/benq-03.html

8ms my it hovers above 20ms 80% of the color range. Be careful about LCD.. they fib a little.

If you want PCIe, wait a month. Simply the video cards are total ripoffs right now unless you get 6600 slowness... and mobos are weak that are out. I'd wait for DFI's ultra ~145 (which is SLI capable!!!!), or better yet ati bullhead boards which have better memory performance and overall performance..

Then drop a 3000 in there, still it's going to be $100 more just on CPU + mobo combo. however, that may be worth it for upgradability later both CPU and Vid card wise.

My sugesstion is wait. Not a good time to buy PCIe/NF4 right now. price/performance sucks.

what do you think about the msi board for a non-oc'er? i think thats what the DFI board has for it more than any other board

*That* nf4 chaintech board has serious issues (plus $130!! for a chaintech! with china caps gimme a break). Like not being able to surpass 220HTT, meaning no OCing, like memory ring or buzz.

It is expensive for a Chaintech, though I thought someone found a way to get it past 220HTT through a beta BIOS or something.... which would show some promise for future OCing.

Make that $230 extra expense, then, if you want to go for the MSI Neo4.

Chiming in on the whole keyboard thing. I shop thriftstores and discount stores all the friggin' time for parts.
My current keyboard, an old HP board I love to death, was bought for $3! I also found my fourth monitor there for only $20.
Really, smarter shopping will do you more good in the long run.

1) Drop the second Raptor. Read the article here about RAID 0. It's a waste of money (slower or equivalent performance). Also, $240 each!? My 74GB Raptor was $179 minus a $25 rebate = $154.

2) Buy a Logitech MX Duo. Why do you need Bluetooth? The standard MX Duo is over $100 cheaper at Newegg, and it's the exact same keyboard/mouse. I have two; they're great. Heck, you could go with a $10 wired keyboard and optical mouse that would work just as well.

3) Why spend $150 on an optical drive when you can get a NEC 3520A for ~$65 on Newegg that'll do the same thing--you can't even buy media for either drive anyway.

4) $390 for an unreleased OS, that'll undoubtedly be full of bugs and incompatibilites? Go for the 32 bit version of XP Pro. It's $150, and it's stable and will be faster in games and benchmarks for now anyway.

5) "Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security $49.95".....uhhh....why? If you're going all out on this serious water cooling setup, then surely you can manage your own dang computer without the help of extra software. Use Adaware and Spybot every few months, and you'll be fine. TrendMicro offers free online virus scanning as well. In the 5 years I've been running without "protection", I've never had a problem. Windows XP's (lame) firewall and my cheap Netgear routers have done a fine job.

6) "Logitech X-530 $79.95 "....you might as well drop the speakers entirely and keep whatever you're using now.

Total: Over $880.98 of savings, and performance will be better. You should shop around. As I've already pointed out on several items, your prices are extremely high. Try Newegg, or Pricewatch in combination with Ressellerratings.com (I don't buy from stores with ratings lower than 7.5).

You'll surely save much more $$$ after finding better prices. Also, you may want to consider a different SLI motherboard and PSU if you plan on meeting your price target. Newegg has an SLI board for close to $220, and an Antec 550W PSU for around $150. That'd be another $240 you could save.

I dont know about that case, but the rest looks good.

If you do get that case, take that bottom 80mm fan and put it on the back of the case, having two fans pulling air out of the back, and that front 80 mm pulling in

Well you can save $1, if you get your copy of Windows XP Pro from ZipZoomFly. You can also save some more money if you buy that Seagate harddrive from ZipZoomFly, ZZF has same price as Newegg, but offer FREE 2nd day shipping, plus ZZF currently has that drive in stock where as Newegg doesn't.
