Can i sell this Hard Drive?

To cut a long story short,

Bootup Windows, corrupt user profile
Run IBM dft reports bad drive but tells me to do the zero-wipe
Run zero wipe
3 extended tests later the drive reports ok
Run the test several more times, still clean
Buy new HD.

Somebody wants to buy it, do I sell it to them? (£40 for a 40gb ibm gxp 60)
Or do I rma it even though there are no bad sectors?

Usually, I'd say RMA the drive we you were going to keep it but if someone is willing to buy it off you and they are aware of the problems - sell it!

Hell, I'll even take my chances and buy it off you for £40 if there is still a couple of months on the warranty!

As long as the buyer is fully aware of the trouble you have had with the drive, I see no problem selling it.

Yep, tell them the trouble you had, tell them the warranty left, sell as is and get a new drive.

How long are IBM's warranties?
I know that Maxtor is 3 years and 3 months(at least that was what it was).

Well why not RMA the drive and when it comes back you can sell it for a bit more money. Just make sure you tell every one in your post that this is an
RMA'd drive.


You should get more money.

The drive is 6 months old, it has a 3 year warranty, are they transferable?

So the two choices are:

Tell him of problems (which I haven't yet) and sell it
RMA it (what do i tell him in the mean time?) then sell it

Few questions:

Won't he run a mile if I tell him?
Will IBM rma it with no bad sectors?

I have never had to RMA an IBM drive, so I do not know for sure. I have heard that they are very strict on RMAs. PM John. He is more loyal to IBM than even me. I am sure he can tell you about what to expect. IT doesn't hurt to give their support people a call. The ones I have dealt with are very good.

Make sure the buyer is informed beforehand. Most people are pretty cool as long as you tell them what is going on.

The warranties are transferable. IBM doesn't ask for a receipt or anything when you RMA. As long as the drive you are RMA'ing is within the 3 yr warranty, they will take it.
