Can I tell if my 5V rail is overloaded?

So I'm having this very strange issue where if I plug in my ipod to my HTPC, it will reboot and get stuck in a reboot cycle and never get to windows. I'm wondering if I'm drawing too much current from +5V USB. The PSU I'm using is a 400W Ultra X-connect with a Q6600 (No O/C), ATI 5450, and ceton quadtuner. I had the ipod hooked onto a powered USB hub. The only other USB devices I have are two tuning adapters (for the ceton quadtuner), RF remote, and wireless keyboard. Any ideas? Thanks

I would also check BIOS settings while ipod is plugged in because it may be switching the default boot device to USB when it detects a USB storage medium. I ran into a similar problem on my system that just needed the BIOS updated to it wouldn't default to USB devices to boot.

If the usb rail (5v blue) is overloaded I'm not sure if it would sense it or not. (Most only sense gnd, 12v and 5v (red)) I could be wrong of course. However if it does notice an unhealthy dip it will go into a continuous reset cycle. Have you tried other USB devices?

USB ports are fused. Overload them and they will disconnect. On the better boards they will reconnect power after the overload is removed. Cheaper boards simply blow the fuse and kill the port.

So I discovered the problem was in fact having too many USB devices. I forgot I plugged in a webcam recently to the motherboard because it was having issues on the hub. As soon as I unplugged the webcam and plugged in my ipod the problem went away. So am I SOL with this PSU or is there something else I can try? I would think the USB hub shouldn't be drawing too much current off the PSU since its powered. One Ipod + webcam shouldn't be shutting the system off.

First, ftfy.

Second, that power supply was a POS when it was made and has only been getting worse while being used in your system.

I completely agree, but it was an extra I had lying around and thought it should at least be able to handle this low power rig. The main reason I still have it is because the cables are so easy to work with.
