Can I use 8-pin PCI-E in 6-pin connector?

I currently have a 2900XT, which uses the 6 and 8 pin connectors. Since I have everything neatly routed behind my mobo, it is quite a chore to replace cables. Can I just use the current 8 pin in the 6 pin slot on my 4870?

Yes. Although depending on how the connector on the cable is designed, it may be difficult to use it if the extra 2 pins can't be broken away.
