Can I use a Tulatin based Celeron on my MSI-6309 Via 133A MB?

I am wondering if I can use a Tulatin based Celeron on my MSI-6309 Via Apollo 133A chipset motherboard?

Or can I only go as high as the 1.1 Coppermine based Celerys?

Do people still sell the old Celerys???

Uh oh, MSI lists six motherboards under "6309." :Q Of the ones they show, one of them supports up to 1.2GHz. err, wait, I goofed... unless you have the 694T Pro, you're out of luck with Tualatins.

I know that they say you can't, but they also said you can't use coppermine PIII's in a intel BX board, but it works just fine. So, I am wondering if anyone has tried it...

I don't think it will work. IIRC the Tualatin chips have a different pin arrangement
and the GTL bus on the mobo uses a different voltage.

It will not work without modifications. I read an article a few months ago (at Tom's hardware I think -- I got the link in this forum) that showed how to modify a Tulatin & a slotkit to run it on a slot 1 BX board. It required a soder job & jumper between a couple pins on the CPU as well as enlarging a couple specific holes on the socket to insolate the pins from making contact. It would work on a socketed motherboard, but if you screw it up, you just killed your motherboard (also, once you do it, you cannot go back to a coppermine) instead of a slotkit. One of the replys said it worked on a slot 1 VIA 133a board & slotkit, so the chipset will handle it.

Problem is that 6309's are S370 boards, a little trickier to hack than a slotket. The whole 6309 family supports coppermines, though, so the most you'd need to run a cellermine would be a bios update. They're still widely available, if more expensive than their tualatin based brethren. Try Pricewatch, you want a S370 128K cache model.

If you're using a P3 of 850mhz or more, it's not really much of an upgrade.....

I'm praying that the 694T PRO will run a tulatin.....The specs say it does, but limits it to 1.13 Ghz wich is contradictory.

Don't worry about the max cpu compatible with a board, Intel CPUs are multiplier locked and thus will run at the correct speed as long as the mobo supportsa the correct fsb.

Now about Tualatin support, Tualatin Support can be determined by the chipset being used. The only Tualatin Capable chipsets are i815 B-Stepping, some stepping of i810e (cant think of the stepping), SiS 630T, and VIA 133T. So if your mobo has VIA 133A, then no, it wont support TUalatin without a Slotket/ or Socket 370 to Socket 370T adapter.
