can I use conductive thermal grease directly on a CPU core?

I want to connect my K7 core directly to the heatplate and the conductive grease is the best I have. Will this work with a p3 as well?

Yes, people use conductive grease on cpu's. Just try not to get any on pins or metal that have any sort of electral current going through them

What happens if I got some of the radioshack stuff on the PCB of the fcpga? Is it ok to just clean it with a tissue? That's what I did and my processor is running fine...but if you look at the bridge from an angle you can see the "smeared" grease. Should I do something extra to get it completely off or just leave it as it is? thx

radioshack "stuff" is cheap silicon oxide paste. Non conductive. You're safe

Really? What about Arctic Silver? and if this was conductive, how would i get it completely off? On the back of the paste it says: COMPOUND IS A HIGHLY CONDUCTIVE MATERIAL FOR TV, RADIO, FM, HIFI AUTOS, TRACTORS, ETC. That's what scared me when I got some of that paste on the PCB....dam it gets messy! thx

Arctic Silver is non conductive, and will not short out anything. Where did you see that warning? I am looking on my syringe of it now, and it just says: Arctic Silver Premium Silver Thermal Compound Optimized For Small Contact Area. It sounds to me like you do not have Arctic Silver, but some other brand of silver thermal compound that is conductive?

If you are talking about the silicone based Radio Shack stuff, they just mean it conducts heat when it says "highly conductive"

ArkAoss: To shrink your van's turning radius i recommend two really large fans aimed sideways, to help you turn. Works best when you're driving on ice, which proves it again: to increase performance, it's important to keep COOL.

Technonut: Arctic Silver is somewhat more conductive than ordinary silicon grease, but not very much. But if you put pressure on it the electric conductivity increases, so it's maybe not the best thing to put on a lapped Celeron...

I tried an array of 20 various size fans from various old pc power supplys, blew out half a dozen fuses till i just wedged a screw driver in their, couldnt find ice, so i tried a wet parking lot at 2 am, my friend told me the radius was increasing, so i put em in the correct blowing direction, still no help, but some how it helped when i swerved around the police cruiser,(i think the air current pushed against it like a hover craft) my friends never gonna hafta worry about toe nail fungus again. um well big jim says hes gotta show his new "girl friend" to his mom,(he did a nice job paintin my friends toes, under the stockings ya cant notice the scabs) well my 5 mins of prison pc time is up.
