Can I use Japanese 5GHz Wifi frequencies in the US?

Is it possible to configure 5GHz Wifi to use Japanese frequencies on Windows 8.1?
I will have to buy a wireless USB adapter, but the current 2.4GHz I have doesn't have any channel/frequency settings that I can find.

I imagine that means I'd need a specific brand/model of adapter whose drivers or utility can set the channels used?

5.18 - 5.6 GHz

The frequencies available for public/consumer wireless networks in the U.S. are 2412-2462 MHz, 5180 MHz, 5200 MHz, 5240-5580 MHz, and 5660-5825 MHz.

Thanks, looks like I can use 5660MHz, channel 132. Do I need specific hardware/drivers to restrict my wireless to that one channel?

You would set your wireless router to use that channel. Your wireless client(s) will automatically use the channel when they connect to the router.

Then you are limited by what your drivers support for ad hoc wireless. All of mine allow me to set the channel for ad hoc wireless...but also they only support ad hoc wireless on 2.4GHz. Though I'd have to double check my laptop's Intel 7260ac. It might support 5GHz ad hoc mode.
