can I use sodimm notebook ram with sdram?

I purchased the HP n5125 that everyone has been trying to snag and the ram is 64 meg of pc 100 SDRAM. I also bought the notebook ram at Compusa over the weekend that is free with rebate; but it is 64 meg of SODIMM Ram. Can I use both? Are they compatible with each other? Please advise?

the sodimm is 144 pin while the sdram is 168 pin! they can't be used together.

If the ram you bought at CompUSA over the weekend is the SODIMM then that will work in your HP laptop. SODIMM is a memory package used in laptop PCs and have 144 pins. Standard DIMMs are used in regular PCs and have 168 pins. SODIMMs are about half the length of standard 168 pin DIMMs. PC100 is a spec for what speed the ram will run at, it has nothing to do with the packaging it is in. As long as the ram you purchased is PC100 and packaged as a SODIMM it will work in your HP laptop.

Cool you might have 128MB in your laptop.You can see a performance boost in ANY OS with that upgrade.

SoDIMM RAM modules are what notebooks with SDRAM use. SoDIMM is merely a different way of packaging SDRAM. Desktops use SDRAM DIMMs (Dual Inline Memory Modules), while laptops use SDRAM SoDIMMs (Small-outline Dual Inline Memory Module). At least that is my understanding. The RAM you bought should work perfectly in your new laptop.

as long as the SODIMM is PC100, it should work with the notebook. I'm stuck with a old notebook that uses EDO SODIMMs, and want to upgrade the RAM.. and I found out the price for EDO SODIMMs are sky high... *sigh*

The notebook takes two sticks of ram. The stick that came with it is SDRAM the other side is empty. I was hoping I could put the Compusa SODIMM ram in that slot. Is that possible?

mmbond, check this memory identification page out, I think it may answer your questions for you. From the "Full Description" of 144-pin SODIMM off that page,

<< 144-pin SODIMMs are commonly found in laptop computers. Each 144-pin SODIMM provides a 64-bit data path, so they are installed singly in 64-bit systems. 144-pin SODIMMs are available in EDO, 66MHz SDRAM, PC100 SDRAM, and PC133 SDRAM. >>

It sounds to me like you did not make a mistake and you may very well be able to put your new memory in your new laptop.
