Can I use this RAM in a normal PC?

This is the part and as far as I'm aware it's normally only used in servers, but can it be used for normal PCs? How would I find a compatible motherboard? I guess by checking the models it is used in and what mobo they use?

Server RAM has ECC, the normal desktops don't have that and thus are not compatible with this RAM. You have there exact rigs it has been tested for.

Damn. Cannot find 32GB RAM for less than £200 but could get some of this cheap on ebay.

you can use ecc ram in consumer systems but it won't do anything - unbuffered ecc ram exists but it isn't this one.

what you can't do is use REGISTERED ram in consumer systems.

Thought it was BUFFERED memory cant be used in standard PCs, ECC can and PCs just dont use it unless its built into chipset.
Registered memory is just made with extreme tight tolerance.


I have a few sets of BUFFERED memory that will not work in the PCs but work fine in our server and the server will not work with anything UNBUFFERED.
Also BUFFERED memory = really slow.

I thought registered memory was the same thing as buffered.

I think the confusion might come from FB-DIMMs, (fully-buffered DIMMs), which are different.

buffered == registered

also buffered memory is usually faster than unbuffered memory in servers where udimm's memory loading causes the max speed to be reduced, see anandtech's server memory article
