Can installing a subwoofer/amp fry a new touchscreen stock headunit

So my friend wants to install his subs into his truck which was initially no big deal because it’s kind of a thing my friends and I have been getting into. But he went to an audio store to ask a professional what he needed and they told him he needs a module for his head unit because installing his setup would fry it. No big deal he can buy the module, but I’ve never seen this problem before with my car or my friends and I’m wondering if this “professional” just wanted sales or if there was truth behind it. It may be that my friends truck is newer with a touchscreen head unit. Anyway just wanted to see if anyone has heard of this before and has some info. Thanks.

Stock headunits generally don't have pre-amp outs on them, so you either need to purchase a special amplifier for the subwoofer that will allow line level inputs, or you have to have some sort of interface between the amplifier and the head unit that will do the same.

You cannot simply take the wires that run the speakers and wire them into the subwoofer or the amplifier, because that will definitely fry something. I'm not sure what the module is that you're talking about (could be an amplifier) or something else.

Modules may be necessary when adding a sub to a stock system for reasons mentioned by deadlyapp. I would ask for more detail about the exact modules the shop is pushing.

Yea sorry I forgot to mention we typically use line output converters which is what we were planning on using in his truck, but even with mentioning that the audio employee insisted we needed a module. That’s about as specific of a description he could give us.

Yea that’s a good idea it’s definitely not worth taking a shot in the dark and ruining my buddy’s head unit, so hopefully they can give me a straight answer.

If you're using a line converter and an external amp, I can't see any reason why you'd need anything else to prevent damage to the head unit. As long as you aren't directly putting an incorrect impedance load on it, I see no problem.
