Can my Radeon 9000 do component output?

I have a dedicated media machine with a Radeon 9000 as the video card. I'm not ready to upgrade the video card as of yet, but I just moved and my new place has a 42" CRT that will take component inputs. I'm convinced that component would look way better on the CRT than SVideo currently does. But is there a way to get my Radeon 9000 to output a component signal?

I found this while searching through other threads:

http://www.computercablestore.com/detail.aspx?ID=7338

Could that actually work?

I'm assuming thats a VGA - Component adapter? Yes, should be fine - VGA is for all intents and purposes roughly the same quality as component anyway - remind me, what outputs does the 9000 have - just one VGA?

My Radeon 9000 has VGA, DVI and S-Video.

So I could get any HD15 - RCAx3 converter and it should work on the Sony CRT tv? Do I have to do anything special with the resolution/refresh settings or will the card figure it out automagically?

as its a VGA output (as opposed to a TV-out) it will probably default as a second monitor at the same resolution. I have a 32" CRT hooked up VIA s-video and I run it at 1280x1024 @ 60 hz (the TV doesn't display that res but it makes the text more readable) - you will be able to select your own settings through ATI tools

It'll detect the TV as a second display automatically so you can make adjustments through control panel->display or through the ATI software

The TV will display the picture through one of the AV channels, much the same as S-Video

Hope this helps!

Component output must be supported by the main VGA chip, even when you have that adapter. ATI have been offering one in their online shop - and checking there will be the easiest way for you to find out whether the R9000 can use it.

The Radeon 9000 is not listed as supported by either ATI's DVI>Component adaptor (the one you have linked), or ATI's VGA> Component adaptor (the other model they sell), so you'll have to see if someone uses the adaptor with a 9000 card to see if it works for sure. If it does work, you can configure it within the ATI Catalyst drivers.

Beyond the ATI adaptors, you would need a VGA to YPbPr transcoder (something like THIS ). You will then need to use something like Powerstrip to configure the output to your display.

For example, I found this cable:

http://cgi.ebay.com/6FT-Gold-VGA-HD15-R...020QQcategoryZ3759QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

That specifically states:

" These cables are not compatible with computer monitor ports or Y/Cr/Cb video. Your video source must provide a YPbPr component video signal from the HD15 port to use this cable

This cable can not convert the video signal from one type to another. Both devices must be compatible with the same signal. Do not assume that this cable will work just because you have a VGA port (ie. you can't use this cable to connect your PC to a device that only accepts component video, since PCs do not output component video)."

Won't work. You either have to use a transcoder to convert the VGA signal, or perhaps an outside chance that ATI's adaptor will work with the 9000 even though it isn't listed as supported.

I'd like to experiment to see what I can figure out, I found this link:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/archive/index.php/t-212199-p-2.html

And it seems as though some people had some luck with the R9000pro - even without the dongle!

I also found cards as low as $25 with native component output at Newegg...plenty of AGP choices under $100.
