Can my school assign a different password for every user?

ok so at my school they make you give them your laptop to hook up to the wireless network there. i guess they just dont want to give their passwords out or something.

Well i used a program to find out what the password was (because it was saved in my wireless networks) and now i have it in case i need to reformat or something so i dont have to go through them. (not to mention they changed a bunch of my sharing settings that i had to go back and change)

My question is this though: and it might sound really dumb. But could this password be just for me? so that they know that whoever uses the network with this specific password is me or is it just the password that everyone uses?

Id like to sort of be anonymous while im using the schools connection and if im DLing anything that could get me in to trouble i dont want them to be able to trace it back to me.

It doesn't matter what the password is. If you connect, then it's traceable back to you.

well what i was planning on was that if i was planning on doing anything that i wouldnt want to be traceable id boot into a different OS on my laptop that i dont use and while im on i wouldnt go on anything that is traceable to me.

what exactly can they track? just my usage right?

and just to clarify its probably all the same password right?

You're at the wrong forum if you think anyone is going to tell you how to hide what you're doing.

Bottom line, it's traceable. Don't want to get caught? then don't do it.

Going last to first:

Yes, it's probably the same wireless key for everyone, although it doesn't necessarily have to be that way.

They can track anything they want to.

Look at it this way: if you are in a room full of people and you yell across the room, everyone in the room is going to hear what you say. If you are on the school's network, the network admins can (and often do) track EVERYTHING you do on their network, regardless of what operating system, computer, cable, chewing gum, beer, etc. you use to attempt to "hide" it. If you really want to be doing things that aren't allowed on the school network, pay for your own connection that doesn't have those restrictions.

Lets just say i do this: I go to school with a laptop that just had a fresh install of linux on it with no personal info on the computer yet. I torrent a few movies and then go home. Now as long as im not logging in my email or anything like that they would have no clue who it was.

Check out a friend's laptop. If it uses the same "password" it could just be the WEP network key or whatever. You might be able to get some degree of anonymity if that's the case. Keep in mind if you're doing something that might involve the police or worse, some federal agency hunting you down, it's probably not enough anonymity. Of course, given that you're asking here, you probably should be doing whatever you're thinking about doing because it seems like you don't know enough to keep from getting caught.

If it's different, it could be a different sort of password that's different for each user. You can check yet another laptop to see if it's different, but it probably would be if the first one you checked was different. Don't bother then. This statement reveals the little understanding you have of networking hardware and how it works. I suggest picking up a book or two and brush up on this stuff. If you connect a device to the network, you may or may not get away with it...totally depends on how protected the network is. I suggest you don't, and save yourself the headache.

So lets say i go and buy a brand new laptop, go directly to school, connect to the network, download a few torrents and continue to download until they ban my MAC address how could they ever trace it to me?

Yes, you can do whatever you want, whenever you want, with whomever you want, wherever you want. This is the U.S. and we have a lot of freedoms here that other countries don't.

You can download illegally on the school's network, whether that be music, movies or kiddie porn. Whatever you want.

You just have to be willing to pay the price. Your actions have consequences to them, and as long as you are willing to accept those, I say do it.

Maybe the rules don't apply to you. This is one way to find out.

Everybody is telling you not to do it. They're giving you the reasons why. You don't like the answers they're giving you, so I'm giving you the answer you want. Go for it. But don't do the crime, if you can't do the time.

Its their network and yes they can track everything and even if you don't log into your email they can still track you via your IP address, so lets say you do torrent a movie, on the server side they well see your IP and where that IP visited and how much bandwidth it used, and if they see that it was excessive they will investigate where it came from espically if you have to give them your laptop it is most likely a secured network. However if it was a unrestricted network then you wouldn't have anything to worry about.
