Every time I try to plug a usb device into my computer while it's on it crashes in XP. If I restart my computer with the device still plugged in it crashes at start up. This is a problem because on my hp printer I am trying to install the installation wizard requires that I hot plug the printer. What am I going to do and has anyone else had this problem?

It has been crashing like crazy the past few days, but I just realize that I think it is when I hot-plug a device that it does that. How am I going to get my printer to work? XP has just about pissed me off :|

Go into the device manager, and remove all the USB stuff, then restart, and let XP find it again.

Sounds like a USB driver problem.

Your not using those "VIA 4 in 1's", are you?

I actually do get a BSOD when I hot plug my Flash card reader. This only occurs on removing, not plugging in. Sandisk did end up saying that the reader was not compatible with XP. The work around for it is to disable the device before you remove it (should be a icon on the taskbar for it).

Re-install with the Native XP drivers

(you don't need to use the 4-in1 from Via.... better if you don't)

PS:

I just plugged in my SanDisk FlashCard reader (USB)..... None of the Mfgr. software....

It works great.

PPS:

It seems like a lot of users disable the XP software, put in third party stuff

watch their computer act strangely, and then say XP suxorz ???????

I actually have a slightly older version of sandisk's SM reader that does not have driver support. I have to use the win2k driver.

srry to hear about the reader. Maybe drivers will get developed some time later???

I know there can be no progress without change, but I think there are going to be

a lot of instances like yours where stuff gets obsoleted by new Op. systems., hardware, etc.

... It's a shame. (Not everything that is old is bad)

This is the recommended procedure for my digital camera.

However, once I've stopped the device and disconnected its USB cable, it won't hot plug again until the next reboot.

My camera docs specifically mention that Win98/Me are hot-pluggable, but not Win2K and XP.

I guess this is a relatively common operating system limitation that some of us have to deal with.
