can of these situations cause a windshield to crack?

I woke up yesterday morning and noticed a 3 inch crack on the front windshield of my car. The crack is on the lower left corner (on the driver's side). The crack seemed to have started from the edge of the windshield and by time, finally became visible. It doesn't have the dents a rock/pebble would make, just a crooked line.

Can any of the following cause the windshield to crack (these are the things I've got professionally done to my car)

1. install car alarm and the following extras:
a. actuators for auto door unlock/lock
b. remote trunk
c. sensors for hood and truck
2. install antenna for xm radio
3. tint windows (only windows tinted were back and side.

Anyone have an idea what caused it or experienced something similar? The crack is now 5" long! My dad said that since the crack may have started at the edge of the windshield, I may need to get it replace *sigh*

I don't know if any of the things you listed could make that happen but I have had mysterious ones do the same thing. Most notably on the windshield of a brand new Altima I had for only a few months. I was really pissed because I could not recall anything hitting it.

Umm, none of the things you mentioned, unless perhaps tinting the other windows causes such an extreme temperature differential putting some weird stress on the windshield, but that's unlikely...

I'm guessing that a pebble was knocked up on the freeway and hit it. Then, over time, the vibrations just made the crack bigger until it was finally noticeable?

 

Look for clues like this, if you see a bulls eye or any impact mark(s) near thye crack, this will be the culprit, if nothing is found, the cause can be one of the following ;

1)Extreme temp change

2)You drove the vehicle over a bumpy road with either a door ajar or the hatch open

(These windshields are glued in place and are part of the structure of the vehicle)

3)It was chipped when it was installed at the factory

4)Improper lamination at the factory

no impact marks, so i'm thinking it's either 2, 3, or 4. i've yet to experience extreme temp change in southern cali. thanks for your help!

i had my windshield crack all the way across when washing my car on a sunny day

Extreme temp changes can do this - either suddenly turning the heater on full and directing it onto the windscreen when it is iced up (my Dad did this in his Camry) - or conceivably directing the full force of the AC onto a very hot windscreen.
