Hey,
Well I've been reading up over multiple posts about this hotfix for Win2K to get ATA100 drives to run at ATA100 in Win2K. In addition, there is also the registry fix. My question, where can I get this hotfix and/or what registry settings are needed. It would great if someone could give me a little explanation of this fix. And could someone also explain the issues associated with this hotfix etc..

Thanks a lot,

I could also use a little info. Been reading all the posts about the "hotfix" but when I followed a link to the hotfix, it just explained what it would do. I didn't see anything to download or instructions to do it.

I did try the registry hack, and I'm still getting sustained data rates at about 34MB/s. With horrible 20sec Random access times. YUCK! And the weirdest thing, is after a fresh reboot, it says UDMA mode.. but its still only getting 33-35MB/s. And then at various times, the HD will switch back to PIO mode. WTF? Very odd.

It never did this when I first had 2k installed, but after my last install I've noticed these problems. Maybe cuz I got the newer via buttmaster drivers.. bleh.

I don't know of any issues with the fix, worked fine for me... although my speeds still don't match the speeds I get in WinME. A lot faster than having nothing though. If you have the VIA busmaster driver installed, uninstall that first before you apply the hotfix.

Hi folks,

I understand that I'm not the only one having troubles to get
Win2K use my ATA100 drive. I'm using a MSI-K7TPro2A Mobo with
two IBM hardrives. One is ATA66 only, but the other is ATA100.
I noticed very slow transfer rate on the last drive, so I went
to device manager and guess what : the drive was operating in
PIO mode. Sucks !

I got a small utility at storage.ibm.com and I downgraded the
ATA100 drive to ATA66. It worked and the drive is now used
with Ultra DMA. So I suspect Win2K not beeing able to deal with
UDMA mode 5.

Does anyone know if there is a better fix for this problem when
using *french* version of Win2K ? Does the "hotfix" exist in
french version ? Does Via or MSI provide any fix ?

Thanks

Gilles

Yes, finding this tool is a bit tricky... It's called "IBM Feature Tool"
and it's located on http://www.storage.ibm.com/techsup/hddtech/welcome.htm

Some comments :
---8<---
IBM Feature Tool (Version 1.10) - Updated
Size - 1568 KB Windows, 1440 KB Linux
The IBMATASW utility is now part of the IBM Feature Tool.

Some systems are not able to handle the high transfer speeds of current IBM hard disk drives. The IBM Feature Tool allows you to switch between Ultra ATA/33, ATA/66, and ATA/100 support (UDMA modes 2, 4 and 5). The IBM Feature Tool does not overwrite existing customer data on the disk drive. See the description in the next category for additional functions included with the utility.
---8<---

This tool runs in DOS mode only. After patching your ATA100 drive to ATA66, you should
notice a strange noise in the drive (motor on/off ?). I also had some weird things
on the screen just after applying this patch. But it worked fine and my BIOS now reports
ATA66 for the ATA100 drive at the end of the POST.

Obviously, this tool is worth using for now ; I suspect ATA100 won't much improve
performances. But PIO Mode definitly sucks ! In PIO my Plextor Burnproof took 12 minutes
at 12x to burn a 650 MB CDR, with buffer regulary falling below 10% (thank you Burnproof).
Now, I burn at 12x while playing q3, with no slowdown. And winamp claims less than one
percent CPU time. UDMA Rules !!!

If anybody knows how to apply an English Patch on a Foreign Windows 2000, please help...

Yeah, the acoustic utility. Thanks for the heads up... I don't think I really need to install it as of now, I'm happy with the current speed increase. But maybe in the future when I get bored and twitchy to mess with my system again. Thanks.

I have a 40gig WD ata100 drive as Master Single on a Promise ata100 card, on boot up its registered as udma mode 5 in Dos, in device manager its shown as SCSI device, which is right? I installed the 4in1 4.25a on the MSI Pro2a. My other devices are a dvd drive as Master Single on onboard controller(secondary controller is empty), a SCSI drive on a SCSI card. None of the above are sharing the same IRQ.

I feel a bit dumb asking this, but how do you uninstall the via busmaster drivers in WIN2K AS? I applied the hotfix after I installed the via busmaster drivers. Was this incorrect?

Thanks

I think you did it wrong. You should remove the via driver first. The way to do that it to run the setup of whatever via driver you are using. Then once it starts, uncheck everything except the ide driver. You should see uninstall as a choice when you hit next.
