what's a good vacuum cleaner nowadays? I am new to buying vacuums but from what i heard, dyson is a top brand. What is the difference between a $500 and a $100 vacuum? I'm really hopign that it will cost no more than $300 but if it lasts forever then i won't have a problem shelling out for one. my parents said our hoover cost around $180 but that was about 20 years ago. it lasted a hell of a long time though. so any recommendations? its just gonna do normal day to day vacuuming. We may get a cat/dog later too.

Do a search, I ended up with a Eureka that was voted best by consumer reports. The damn thing kicks ass, according to my SO.

I have the Eureka Capture, picked it up for $140ish at Sears and love it, would recommend.

I also want a dyson for my new place but odds are that the Eureka's that people are bragging about will be on my list due to budgetary constraints

Woot has a refurbed Dyson on there fairly frequently. I believe it is about 250.

I got a Panasonic one at Frys. Works great with plenty of suction and it didn't cost a buttload of money either.

I got a handheld dyson (root6 IIRC) as we have hardwood floors and just wanted something small. Love it.

I have a Hoover Mach 5, which is a clone of first-gen Dyson technology available for $170 at WalMart. dartworth has one also. Detailed thread at FW, which mentions the Hoover Whisper as a $120 "Dyson Killer".

Have the Hoover Fusion from Wal-Mart, sucks like no tomorrow. When it dies we will be upgrading to the Mach 5 which was not out when we bought our Fusion.

I picked up a Dyson when it was on clearance at Target. Aside from the purple color... the damn thing is awesome.

I ended up getting the Whisper that you mention.. It's pretty good for the price. Can't really complain since I've only had it for a week. One thing I don't like about it is the fact that the handle is so high and it's not adjustable. Pretty bad ass that it turns into a canister vac pretty much though. Hard as hell to find.

If you really want a dyson. Frys has tons of them stacked (refurb) for 200 bucks. I was close to getting that one, but figure I should save money for more important things.

BTW this is NaOH who created that previous thread.

you heard wrong.
dyson is never a top scorer in consumer reports. it has good perception altering marketing/image yes. but it doesn't translate into performance or value for dollar.

Consumer reports has never been right on anything.

There is only one vacuum, it's name is dyson and it is the one that rules them all. Nothing can even come close to it. PLUS! It never loses suction.

consumer is right on a lot of things, and companies that have tried to sue them have always gotten pwned. and in the case of things like vacs people are easily misled. people do not buy enough vacs often enough to have a good comparison so they are easily impressed, comparing their old and worn unit to a new one always yields "impressive" results for instance. consumer reports testing for things like vacumns is far more scientific than some anecdotal nonsense from fanboys. and they tested the claim that it never loses suction, and it was a load of hogwash, and its suction wasn't that great to begin with they found.

Personal experience disagrees with these findings. I'll go by what I know and experienced rather than what I read. It really is that good. Amazing beyond belief would be a better way to describe the Dyson experience.
