Can someone help me? Please?

I need some help diagnosing a problem with my computer. It freezes or locks up on me when it has been on for a couple of hours. I have the AMI Desktop Client Manager installed. It says my CPU fan status is 0 rpm and that there is a voltage warning on my board. Neither of these things is factual. I have 3 fans inside the box and they are all running. I had the voltage checked, and it is right on the money.

The person who checked it thinks it might be my motherboard or possibly my CPU, but he said that there was no way to check it out. That I would just have to replace them both in hopes of fixing the problem. I don't like and can't afford that solution.

I don't know exactly which of this info will help but here goes. I have a PC100 - M598 main board, 333 mz, AMD K6(R)-2 processor, AMI BIOS, 6.4 gig but only using 2.3 of them. Is this enough info?

Does anyone have any suggestions? I will appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks. Lynne

is there any way you can give us a tempurature reading of some kind when your computer has been running for a little while? If it's getting too hot, it's most likely the CPU, even though you have 3 fans. you have to be sure

ok, now, if the problem isn't overheating, it's probably NOT the power supply, so I'm almost out of ideas, except your computer reports your CPU fan at 0 RPM.. does it connect to the motherboard? or is it connected to one of the wires that the harddrives use?

If it's connected to the motherboard with the 3 pin connector, then it SHOULD be reading the RPM correctly. because it ISN't, then that means that either your fan is running kindof odd, or your Motherboard is having some odd problems.

coupled with that, you have a voltage warning. does the monitor on the computer say what voltage you are getting? does it fluctuate?

The voltage warning could be part of the problem, in that it might be set at the correct voltage, (2.2 Volts) but the power supply could be giving you some odd power spikes or something like that. try to confirm that your motherboard is set at the right voltage (check the jumpers and the manual for this).

I don't think it is the power supply, cause we already put a new one of those on. That was the first solution that did not work.
On the voltage problem, the warning thingee says:
Board +12 v 11.75 v
And that is all it will tell me.
The guy who checked my voltage also checked my fans and said they are all hooked up right, but could be possible. How can I check the temp without rebooting and getting into BIOS? Can you tell I am about dumb as a post about this? Thanks. Lynne

Do you feel like peeking inside?
Take the side panels off the case so you can see inside.looking at the mobo,is there alot of dust coating the components?
Can you verify that the cpu fan is working?

Hint...I don't have high hopes for a pc chips mobo or ami bios working right ever.Thats just my personal opinion.I have had to many in my shop for repairs. My old supplier won't even answer the tech phone anymore because he sold so many bad ones.An answering machine screens all tech calls.(I don't do business with them anymore)

OK - as soon as I accessed the Motherboard Monitor program alarms started going off. It says I have a temp of 127 degrees and a voltage of 14.11 - well actually it shows a lot of different voltages, but that is the one showing on the alarm.
Yes, I can take the cover off and look - can't sleep anyhow. ;~) Will advise in a few. Thanks. Lynne

Now I have the cover off. There does seem to be some dust. Don't know how to classify quantity - but it does not seem like much to my eyes. All three fans (power supply, cpu, and chassis) are running.
What now?
Oh, and if I buy another mother board ( guy is offering an ASUS for about $80), what else will I need to replace?
Thanks. Lynne

The cpu you have does run hotter than others by nature.I would presume the fan is not spinning up as fast as it could or as some that are out there and it could be that you need some thermal grease between the cpu and heat sink.

what concerns me is the voltage. You can do nothing about that.It is a function of the mobo and if it is out of spec,it could kill your cpu as it kills the mobo.

now would be the time to upgrade.$200 will get you into a new mobo and K6-2 500 with change to spare.

Plead poverty.Make your guru clean hell out of the case with canned air and check cpu fan/heatsink for correct rpm and contact to cpu.

(My advice is go for an upgrade, but squeeze as much out of this as you can)

Thank you so very much for your help and advice. Will start saving my pennies for the upgrade. Short term will fall on my knees and beg for cleaning job on existing set-up.
Also will only run this little darling for 1 hour or less a day. Oh, brother, now I am about to experience withdrawal. Thanks again and God bless ya'll. Lynne

A few things to check before you get another M.B.
Download the manual if you don't have it:
http://www.mediaplusonline.com/Mainboards/manuals/m598/m598_mainboard_manual.htm

Look especially under H/W Monitor + CPU PNP Setup
There is a section on System hardware Monitor that will tell you your voltages ect. Under CPU Plug & Play it should be set to Auto, you could set this to Manual and set to 333MHz. and the core voltage needs to be 2.2V and the I/O voltage needs to be 3.3V with a 95MHz. FSB and a 3.5 multiplier.
