Can someone post the PC equivalent of The Ten Commandments?

My PC has become corrupted and I suspect a virus because recently a JavaScript window opened, stating that Microsoft Antivirus 2013 detected a process and needs to perform a scan. Since there is no Microsoft Antivirus I didn't click the "OK" button. I know not to open attachments in emails from unknown sources. I won't open an email attachment even if it's from a friend if there is no subject or greeting. I rarely click on banners. Full system scans in Safe Mode with Malwarebytes and Superantispyware didn't find anything sinister and Kaspersky PURE won't scan in Safe Mode. Unless I can find another Hijackthis I'll have to beg the numerous software publishers for permission to redownload my programs. And I have over fifty games on Steam. Restoring my system after reinstalling Windows 8 Pro will take two full weekends. I'd appreciate a list of "DO NOT" steps for good PC hygiene. We all would benefit. Thank you very much.

Do not reinstall windows until you run a anti virus boot disc. Try the AVG one http://www.avg.com/gb-en/avg-rescue-cd. It cleans places other anti virus can't touch.

There is actually a known problem with java at the moment, it seems there are several vulnerabilities that java are struggling to release a patch for and it is possible you don't actually have anything unwanted on your system as long as you didn't navigate to the page that "warning" was directing you too.

If this isn't a regular occurrence then I wouldn't beat yourself up about it too much, remember anti virus/anti spyware companies can only write code for malware that they have identified which means someone has to get infected first.

That rescue CD sounds like a gimmick if you ask me

Sounds like nonsense to me, what full capacity? It's a software program just reinstall it if it's screwed up. Never try fixing an OS that is to messed up, just gives you headaches.
