<< I love W2K but would have to say that at this point you might want to wait til April or May when Whistler comes out. Whistler is the replacement for both 98/ME and 2000. It will be all NT code no more DOS. There will a few versions from what I hear, like personel, professional, server, advanced server and super duper billion dollar server. >>

I think that April / May is wishful thinking. Whistler hasn't even gone Beta 2 yet and probably won't until Feb- Not a lot of chance of getting it straight by May. I expect to see the RTM of Whistler Personnel in Aug. Having worked with the Betas before that may be early also

Well after < 1 week of use (surfing the net), it hard crashed on me 3 times. Oh but it gets better. Then it takes out my entire HD (all my partitions with all my downloaded files, school papers, etc) so I spend 6 hours trying to get my HD to recover all that stuff and finally I gave up and reinstalled Win98SE. And on another forum I dug up a post I made where the same thing happened to me with Win2K earlier this year. (I totally forgot about that) Guess Win2K isn't for some people.

RagingBITCH: Did you upgrade or did you do a fresh install of Win2K? I've never liked upgrading an OS. It's better doing a clean install. I prefer the dual boot option myself. Win98SE for games, Win2K for everything else. One word of caution on dual booting. I partitioned my 9GB drive in about 1/2. Loaded Win98SE on the first partition. Loaded Win2KPro on the second partition. Win98SE was giving me problems so I formatted the drive and reinstalled it. I forgot that Win2K puts files on that partition and in the process I had blown them away! OOPS! Live and learn...

RagingBITCH, do you think that Windows 2000's instability on your machine could be just a *little* bit related to the INSANE level of overclocking on your processor? :disgust:

You are running a 566MHz Celeron 2 at 952MHz, and you are wondering why Windows 2000 crashed repeatedly and corrupted your hard drive? :Q

"Real" operating systems like Windows 2000 and Linux tend to be more sensitive to problems caused by overclocking than toys like Windows 9x. I bet that your stability problems with Win2K would "magically" go away if you ran your processor at the speed it was intended to run.

agreed. definitely. the fact that there's only 128Mb of memory isn't helping either, as 2000 likes *at least* 256...

I say wait for Whistler... you can be among those who find out how often it crashes and how poorly it uses memory and how much hardware will have to be replaced to be compatible. There is also the issue of what software will work... then those of us who have Win2k will ask these questions and be happy to be where we're at....
