Precisely.

AOL likely has records of who had what IP at what time, but you're not getting that without a court order.

About the only way you'll be able to find out, is to have a source within AOL give you a breakdown of what dial up POP's are assigned what IP blocks. Without knowing the IP handouts across the country, you'll never really be able to tell.

Potentially AOL could have logs that show the information, if you have a specific time. But I somehow doubt they'd be willing to give out that information without a very good reason.
