It depends. What is it that she does that makes her look different?

MotionMan

She has purple and/or pink in her hair.

And so she is conveying the message that she thinks that purple hair is OK, that she is a non-conformist (if even small one) and I, personally, do not look for those characteristics in a doctor or lawyer.

MotionMan

So, is she conveying a message, or are you inferring?

In this case, there really is no difference. If we asked her, do you think she would say that purple hair is not OK? Or that she is not a little bit of a non-conformist?

MotionMan

The difference is in intent. As I noted above, some people (myself included) don't analyze what message their attire sends out, and simply choose a personal appearance which makes them happy.

If you chose to infer things about them based on this, then you are taking the active role, pigeonholing them.

So are you someone who 1) does not care how you look or 2) does not care how others perceive you based on what you wear?

Neither. I'd look for the 7 fingered guy in flannel and jeans. He's the only one talked about here who'd have any clue on construction issues.

i never said i thought they wouldnt get treated differently. the original question wasnt that, however... it was should they be taken seriously. totally different. i think they could be taken seriously, as well as think that people will think less of them due to their upbringing. when youre taught old ways, its hard to gain new insights. doesnt make the old ways correct any more than it makes the new views correct. at least the way i think isnt limiting people based on a few strands of hair being a nonstandard color.

Now this gal, I have trouble taking seriously. Would you want to be seen in public in this outfit? So the purple hair really would make me take her more seriously.

Being not taken seriously because of appearance I think is being treated differently.

3) thinks you are way too hung up on people conforming.

In all seriousness, everyone cares to a certain extent, and conformity has its place. My point is really that people choose their appearance for a variety of reasons, and to make immediate, overriding assumptions based on perceived nonconformity is closed-minded.

youre missing my point... you said they would get treated differently, not stating whether you thought they SHOULD be. stating a real fact is different than stating your ideal.

What is perceived nonconformity about purple hair? I call that overt nonconformity.

And, to appear in a nonconform manner yet to think that you will not be perceived as a nonconformist is naive. It is doubly so if you are in a profession like being a doctor or lawyer.

Let me be clear: I think that they should expect to be treated differently and to expect otherwise is naive.

It may not be right, but it is true.

Ten years ago wild hair colors would have been nonconformist. Now it is as blasé as a man with an earring.

Besides, there is a difference between streaks of color and a bleached then dyed bubble-yum purple 'do. Lets not get too far from the original discussion...

only if he/she wears puke green nail polish and black lipstick too.

didn't read everyone else's reply, but in what context are u asking? if the person is a rock star or painter or artist, y'know those artsy-fartsy careers, u can pretty much expect that they dress and groom themselves differently.

I meant difference in intent. I am much more willing to believe that a person has streaked their hair because they feel it looks flattering on them than I am about someone with an all over, fluorescent color.

The latter is almost certainly rebelling/crying out for attention.

Do you believe that people who streak their hair purple do not know that purple streaks is somewhat out of the norm?

So are you discriminating against people with purple hair in favor of those with purple streaks? It's still the same thing. A streak is just as distracting as a purple 'do. Either you are going to take them seriously, or not.

And what if they are wearing a see through rope thingy shirt? Are you even going to notice the hair at all? What if they are bald, and have their shaved head painted purple with the see through rope thingy shirt on? What then, huh?

I vote for the bleached then dyed bubble-yum purple 'do! And the see through rope thingy shirts! And wearing bikini bottoms on the outside of skin tight pantsuits!
