It depends. What is it that she does that makes her look different?
MotionMan
She has purple and/or pink in her hair.
And so she is conveying the message that she thinks that purple hair is OK, that she is a non-conformist (if even small one) and I, personally, do not look for those characteristics in a doctor or lawyer.

So, is she conveying a message, or are you inferring?
In this case, there really is no difference. If we asked her, do you think she would say that purple hair is not OK? Or that she is not a little bit of a non-conformist?
MotionMan
The difference is in intent. As I noted above, some people (myself included) don't analyze what message their attire sends out, and simply choose a personal appearance which makes them happy.
If you chose to infer things about them based on this, then you are taking the active role, pigeonholing them.
So are you someone who 1) does not care how you look or 2) does not care how others perceive you based on what you wear?
