I meant difference in intent. I am much more willing to believe that a person has streaked their hair because they feel it looks flattering on them than I am about someone with an all over, fluorescent color.

The latter is almost certainly rebelling/crying out for attention.

Do you believe that people who streak their hair purple do not know that purple streaks is somewhat out of the norm?

We could keep going in circles about this all day, and nobody's minds will be changed...

Suffice it to say that I don't see what the big deal is. It's just hair for god's sake. I take people seriously when I have been given a reason to. They can look like a bum, but if I have reason to believe they know what they are talking about, I will be inclined to listen.

depends on their status. its like rockers who dress slightly feminine because they are so hyper masculine they can pull it off. if you aren't successful or powerful it doesn't work so well.

No... Any stripes that aren't blonde highlights wouldn't work. And even then the two colors have to merge. Lets not even get into grey highlights...

If you can't tend to your own hair I certainly don't want you to teach my child math and science.

Instead it would be much better to take care of your appearance to show what a wonderful person you are:

Look how clean and groomed this stud is.

His clean looks helped him get plenty of women.

So if you were on trial for murder, you wouldn't have a problem with a lawyer who was a dead ringer for Hitler? Don't think that "appearance" might have a negative impact on the jury? Willing to bet your life on it?

Sure they can. If my superior had purple streaks, I'd better take them serious. If they also have big $$$, and I'm trying to sell something to them, I'd take them serious.

Yes.

People who voluntarily look a certain "different" way are either trying to rage against the machine, are trying to convey a certain message to others or don't care about their appearance.

I do not want any of those types of people as my doctor or lawyer.

MotionMan

So, your doctor/lawyer cannot have a beard?

I think beards are fine.

I am not the one who thinks that people with facial hair are sub-par, Homerboy is.

pink hair? purple hair? What kind of professional job can you get looking like that? And what client/colleagues will take you seriously?

There's a reason I stopped coloring my hair dark red and stopped wearing earrings during my last year of college. I'm not a kid anymore and it's time to represent myself in a more professional manner. All I'm saying is that if someone is in their post-college years (undergraduate only), it's time to stop looking like a kid.

Now, I will admit, I have plenty of tattoos; but none of them can be seen at work (they don't come below my bicep). But everyone see's your hair, and last time I checked, you can't wear a hat in any respectable office.

On the contrary. What shows a genuine lack of intelligence is not realizing, or thinking that you can ignore that in our society, whether fairly or not, you're going to be judged on your appearance.

I used to work as a manager of a pizza shop. There was a local kid with dyed hair, about 20 facial piercings, non-mainstream tattoos, etc. He was one of the nicest, most polite kids I've ever met. If I had needed a babysitter for an evening and he were available, I wouldn't have felt uncomfortable leaving my young children in his care. However, there's no way in a million years I would have hired him for the pizza shop. I'm aware that our customers would judge him based on his appearance. If his presence would turn away customers, then it's a bad thing. The lack of intelligence on his part was thinking that he could express his individuality and not be discriminated against. Nice kid, really. I liked him a lot.

Like I said earlier in the thread - first impressions are hard to overcome. Only the foolish believe in an ideal world where people are going to ignore appearance. Besides, you don't always have the opportunity to interact for a half hour to start to get to know the person.

Sure, though I have to admit the initial reaction wouldn't lean that way.

I agree, and as others said it's not just the hair, but their overall look, their countenance if you will, that decides how seriously they should probably be taken. Body language, how they carry themselves, is also pretty important in how I size someone up.

certainly.
What if a person is dressed in a nice suit, but has pink streaks in their hair?
well, first off, i hope the suit or dress shirt doesn't clash with the hair.

Of course! If you wear an orange tie with purple hair, no one is going to take you seriously. But, wear a red power-tie with fluorescent purple hair, and it's instant respect.

Black goes with everything.
Do they have suits up in north country?

Is he the best? Can I trust him? I'd rather have the best looking like Hitler than Joe Schmo in a ridiculous self-importance loop that has him buying overpriced clothes and thinking he's somehow important to the world.

It's not about ignoring the rest of the world, or being ignorant of how people act in it. It's about being better than them. And yes, by not letting looks affect my decisions I'm a better person than anyone who does. Period.
