Son of a... my piece of crap A-DATA flash drive has been refusing to be recognized, recognized but empty, or generally being hosed in some way for the past 2 weeks or so. I was about to buy one locally as I need one everyday that is reliable, but testing on my own computer, it worked 90% of the time, rather than it not working 90% of the time like it is doing to me today. I'm afraid it is gone, as the rare time it recognizes and is labeled correctly, it is empty! So at Walmart I'd need to pay $20 for a 1GB Sandisk/PNY/Lexar, while Buy has the 2GB Sandisk for $20 w/ free shipping, or just $10 if I find a friend to sign up for GCO.

But I don't want that Sandisk U3 stuff as far as encryption or password protection, apps that I don't need, or anything that makes it not ready to use without popups in one second. I'd buy something else if I can't get rid or disable it. I've seen my friends with them... they would take way too long to be ready after being plugged in (some of the computers I have to use are not USB2.0 as well), didn't seem to work on Fedora 3, and generally seemed like a PITA to me.

So these are pretty popular devices, and I haven't really heard any complaints about U3, but if I can PnP with it in linux... no thanks.

But the real question is, can I disable that stuff and just use it as a normal flash drive?

If you use ink coupons, Staples has flash drives for pretty cheap. And if you wait till next week theres a 12% off coupon too.
