My experience is that there usually aren't ENOUGH handicapped parking spots.
Yes, sometimes you see several empty ones...but go to Costco...they're almost never open...and our Home Depot...it's unusual to see more than one or two open.

Agreed. Almost any large retailer like Costco, Sams, Walmart etc the spaces are always full. Arenas typically the same but to a little lesser extent just from the trouble they can have getting around them.

Usually by law, there has to be a certain ration of Handicap slots per public parking spaces.

And always a minimum of one or two.

OP sound retarded. Maybe this would qualify him for getting a "disabled/Challenged" sticker.

OP should consult his doctor.

I'll probably get hammered for this, but handicap parking laws are just plain silly. How is having to walk or wheelchair a few more feet going cause anyone any issues other than inconvenience? If there's an actual physical reason that someone needs to be parked closer to the store, then, by that logic, all of their needs inside the store should be catered to, as well. Now, obviously there should be wide spots for vehicles that need wheelchair access, but why mandate them to be in the front?

Don't worry OP.

You post in AT. I'm sure that counts you as mentally handicapped at some level.

Park in all the handicapped spots all you want and if someone questions you, just point to this forum and I'm sure you will win instant sympathy and understanding.

Walk a mile in someone else's shoes. What's your issue with having to walk a few more feet other than your sense of inconvenience?

Oh, pity party. We've all had issues in our life.

I have had three knee operations, have no cartilage in either knee and a toe that constantly goes numb when walking. Handicap spot, which I'm sure I could get, is the furthest thing from my mind.

Dude...MOST days, I can walk from the front of the store to the back...and part way back without stopping.

BUT, once I get in the store...in those stores who care about the business of those of us who have mobility issues...I ROCK the cripple carts...and can get my weekly shopping done.

Pussification of America. No handicap stuff (some exceptions) in Europe, yet people still do fine even in tiny ass towns on steep mountains in Italy. Most of the people with handicap permits I see are fat guys too lazy to walk.

Well, this thread went about how I expected. OP posts of an extremely minor indiscretion and the full weight of AT holier than thou rollers comes down on him.

ATOT never disappoints.

I had to pick up a friend at the local gym and I was waiting outside in my car. To make a long story short, I was parked further away and I noticed that there was a handicap spot no one appeared to be using, so I drove into the spot temporarily waiting with my engine running for my friend to come out. I was not in the spot for more than 3 minutes until this lady in her 40s or so came next to my window yelling at me and asking aggressively if I am disabled. I rolled down my window and said I was just waiting for my friend but she yelled even more saying that she doesn't care and that she's disabled. She walked completely fine but she claimed to have some toe issue. I started moving my car and she said I look like a handicap or something like that which was a low blow. I yelled something back as I backed out and she jumped back in my face and started to memorize my license plate number saying she will call the cops. I said go for it. The convo got pretty heated.

I took down her license plate number as well. I highly doubt she has a disability severe enough to warrant a handicap spot because she certainly didn't have trouble moving. I want to verify this if she decides to stir anything up. I am aware that I probably should have not used the handicap spot to wait but I would've appreciated if she hadn't approached me aggressively yelling at me like she's on PMS.

Short answer - No - apart from report you to the cops, which will result in exactly nothing.

You are right in that you should not have used the handicap spot. Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

Handicapped spots are more government intrusion in my life, favoring one class of people above all others, in an effort to be as PC as possible.

You know what bugs me? When hospitals and medical office buildings only have 1 or 2 handicapped spots. If there's any place you HAVE to go to when you are handicapped, it's medical treatment. My former PT place doesn't have any handicapped spots, I suspect that they consider that to be some kind of physical therapy.

Anyway, best to anyone here who deals with handicaps. And the response from the others is what I expected.

A handicapped pass came in my new car. Only thing I can think of is that someone test drove it, or a salesperson took it home for the night and then it got left in there. No idea what to do with it...
I think you know what to do with it. You are now entitled to the best parking spots! You can even have the van loading spots.:awe:

She can't do anything because she isn't a cop. Next time don't park in a handicap spot like a douche.

My wife is handicapped, we have a placard that I have in the glovebox when we use a handicapped spot, she is not capable of driving.

This is yet another ATOT "I was going 80 in a 35 zone at night on a winding road while it was snowing and I had my head lights off and this asshole cop gives me a summons" entitled asshole thread.

I think it's MORE unethical to have so many empty handicapped spaces. Shouldn't it be first come, first served to the closest spots? [Edit for compassion]: Just make sure to leave one spot open for the truly disabled. How many handicapped people are actually gonna be at walmart at the same time?[/edit]

Confession: I use handicapped bathroom stalls because there's more room and privacy.
