Can Trump surprise us?

For one thing, I dont think he gives a damn about the repug party or its long term interests, its all about him. Even though he may believe in curtailing immigration and certain aspects of the economy (protectionism), I do think he may be open to adjustments on certain policies, esp foreign affairs, that can do the US and the world a lot of good. NOT for the good of the US or the world per se, but for his own image. We know that he craves a spot on Mt. Rushmore which would be his ultimate goal.

And being a lame duck president, he is under no pressure from lobby groups or other interest groups to get re-elected or help the repugs position themselves for the next election.

Areas where he may have a chance of altering policies on are Israel and Iran. We know he is a penny pincher and does not like to see billions in grants going to some foreign entity, so he may be prone to making Israel aid conditional (ie, stop the genocide and expansion of war to its neighbors).

He can potentially make peace with Iran by re-instilling Obamas nuclear deal with them (yes, a very bitter pill to swallow in implying that his predecessor had it right to begin with) but that the potential rewards are so huge and even may earn him a Nobel prize, that he may overlook his earlier positions on the matter. Remember his peace overtures to Kim Jong Un which he was proud of?

So basically I dont think Trump wants to be remembered as some deranged prick of a prez but as an American hero to be respected in history. I know its a long shot, but does anyone see any possibilities of that happening?

Remember, his ego would be the main driving force in all this.

p.s. AT's censor converts the c word to 'beautiful woman' but prick is OK.

If you want respect, you act in a manner worthy of respect. Do you recall Trump ever doing that?

Hate to say it, but the only time I saw him "acting in a manner worthy of respect" was in his meeting with Kim Jong Un. I believe he is aware of the positive repercussions to his ego when he may have a chance of doing something he will be respected for.

Didn't he suck up to the guy non-stop?

Lol no.

Trump will work with Israel to finish off any viable future Palestinian state. He’s been very up front about this. However bad you think it is now things are going to get much worse.

He is also not going to reinstate the nuclear deal with Iran. Iran for one wouldn’t agree without major US concessions.

This is just magical thinking.

I don't think that people really comprehend that the Israeli right won and they will depopulate Gaza/WB though intimidation, force, and starvation. Everybody is going to get pushed into Egypt/Lebanon/Syria.

Best we can hope for the lack of action from him because he's lazy. Though I'm sure there will be many by his side to push his agenda forward.

Yup, that's the only thin reed left to cling to. That, and his thin-skinned tendency to fall out with people who don't flatter him. Unfortunately the likes of Netanyahu and Xi (and of course, Putin) are quite smart enough to know how to work with that.

Sadly he’ll force Zelensky to accept horrible terms to end the war or suffer total defeat when the U.S. weapons dries up.

Assuming Hamas doesn’t call a truce, they will get blown off the face of the earth probably by the US directly.

And then all the rage will be focused on Iran.

It seems a majority of the American people want to grab on to something. Be a part of some potential big thing. Part of Trumps base (evangelical and rural uneducated) believe he’s a minor god figure. Like the peasants created/believed so many superstitions and an Almighty in heaven would save them at the same time, during the Black Plague.

Another mistake most people analyzing these things make (including me too often) is that the majority public care about politics. Most people do not care, they do not want to care, they aren’t paying attention, and they’ve got their lives to lead. When they vote they think about how well off they are feeling and if they are not feeling positive, they will vote for the other party. Everything else is just noise.

Plus, the issue doesn’t appear to be the messenger, but the message. The average Trump voter wants one thing back, above all: He wants to be able to graduate High School (or not), take a job at the local WidgetWerks, and make enough to buy a house, raise a family, and retire and go on Social Secuity (That may not be there because of Trump). Just like dad could in 1950. We all know that’s not going to happen, but that’s the thing the majority of Trump voters seem to be pining for.

The people voting for Trump were never going to vote for anyone else. They want project 2025. They want “them” to be deported. The (D) leadership failed to produce a coherent message to get working class people to vote for them. Trump gained in almost every demographic. The Dems got their asses kicked. They thought being “not Trump” would be enough. They need to find a way to appeal to them. Calling them garbage, scum, uneducated, deplorable and such is not working and only reinforces the perception that the Democratic Party has become elitist. And part of the reason they lost is TDS. "Trump Devotion Syndrome". She lost because they love DJT. They love is perceived toughness and bullying. They admire him. I was wrong in thinking the American public was done with him. And coming from a blue state to living in a red state (South Florida) the last 5 years, I still didn't see it.

I think there are going to be so many RW demands from within his own cabinet/administration/consultants that there will be enormous pressure for them to get rid of the filibuster, no matter what McConnell thinks. He isn't even going to be leader.

I sincerely doubt this but I hope it's true!

When people talk about Republicans wanting to eliminate the filibuster my question is always 'why would they want to do that' and people don't have a good answer.

He will go down in world history as America's Hitler.
Possibly, hopefully he was lying about those things too. No doubt he'll be harsh, but he may not be murderous. If he acts too extreme, some States are going to respond. It will be important to support them if/when necessary.
