I will accept your whining when you try to learn Russian.

IMO I think Russian is a very easy language to read. A vowel in Russian when reading Cyrillic is always the same vowel when written in another word.

Now if I only could figure out твёрдый знак (&#1098 and мягкий знак (&#1100 Those silent letters confuse me and I don't know how to apply them.

ladies and gentlemen, english is too complicated. is there any way we as the english speaking nations of the world can band together to make this language better?

i can think of a couple things off the top of my head:

1. add new accented letter marks to indicate certain pronunciations (ie long a or short a)
2. decide on s or z once and for all
3. replace the most noticeable frenchification (ie cheque instead of check)

hopefully we can come up with a petition to present to the UN or something

in order to make life (and communication) easier for everyone in the future

I agree. Spelling in English is horrible and ridiculously hard for non native people to learn. English is a mix and mashup of different languages and thats why we have convoluted spelling.I'm sure I could create a list of different words and their spellings and how non-nonsensical it all is.

Man I would think Russian would be hard to learn. Maybe not as bad as say Japanese or Chinese or something though, since the Cyrillic characters aren't drastically different than Latin ones in English.

Did you take Russian in school, or are you a native speaker? I wish I could read/write/speak Russian.

language can only evolve naturally.

Any attempt to make conscious changes to a language, written or spoken, is doomed to fail in any free society. You have to have the power to force the changes down the populace's throat (e.g. Simplified Chinese).

We'd have to nuke Britain from orbit to get rid of the problem.

A boot is something you wear not something your car has. Trousers.......really? Pissed means angry not drunk and if I'm going on a bender it does not mean I'm gay.

No its always been learning as a hobby. Foreign languages are my thing as well as history. I noticed a huge similarity between Greek and Cyrillic alphabets and I was able to figure out how to read Russian (and Bulgarian, Ukrainian, any country that uses Cyrillic). Russian IMO is one of the most phonetic languages and the spelling will never fool you like English does. I can read and pronounce the words, I just don't know what the hell I'm saying Now that I have the alphabet, its time to learn verbs and vocab.

We should get rid of all current languages and replace them with Sindarin and/or Klingon.
