Doctors tend to donate services on things like this for free...and it's also great publicity for them to do so. I think bashing the doctors is pointless...bashing the insurance companies and the general healthcare situation in this country might be more accurate, but equally pointless.

this pisses me off to the core... i don't see how the hospital or her doctor wouldn't pay for it, much less get a government grant. they could take this girl to a learning hospital and have the surgery in a medical journal and learn more about this form of dysplasia. i donated and i pray everyone else in here does, too.

She doesn't really have a doctor, she came here from another country for treatment.
The hospitals are nothing but companies that need money to survive. The surgeons wanted to donate the surgery, but normally a hospital won't let them do the surgery until X amount of money for expenses is raised. As soon as that X was hit, though, they did do the surgery. She still needs a lot of physical therapy and reconstructive/plastic surgery (skin grafts, etc.) so she still needs our support.
