Whew - I don't remember seeing a thread with this many "senior" posters since.... back in the day haha.

I joined back in 99 (I was 11 at the time) and my Uncle had referred me to this site. I had already built my own computer and loved messing around (and by around I mean "messing up") my Dad's and my computer. To serve as somewhat of an outlet for my curiosity as well as a source of information he told me I should join here and read. I don't know what name I used back, but, given that I was 11 and it was in the days of Dial-Up, my posts were few and far between as I generally couldn't add too terribly much to the conversation, but learned a ton from each one.

Here I am 1 month shy of my 21st birthday and I'm still posting here haha. I love helping people out with anything, and, if you know where to go, these forums are still an amazing source of knowledge Those were good times - To this day, I credit AT for most of my foundation of Computer knowledge.

ANYWAYS - my interpretation of this thread was not to illicit old angry memories or to call Dennil out, but it was to merely say, "Hey I remember this time from back when". I'm not sure how this discussion has taken 3 million different tangents away from that, but I never noticed any ill will in Reitz's post.

Ah, this thread sure takes me back. What a cool community we had back when there were just a few thousand members. Before creative misspellings became fun. Before every other post was a link to youtube.

I was already 40 when I discovered the original forum - I was getting into building and wanted to learn more about Cyrix and AMD processors, and becoming part of an online community never occurred to me until it had already happened. I did a bunch of parts trading in the first couple years. Then I got into political discussions with conjur when the country got hijacked by the neocons. I actually thought for a while I could change people's minds by presenting my clear reasoning.

I remember the whole drama and shi ... er stuff (swearing on AT? That freaks me out since I only log in couple of times a year now)

I'll echo what others said here, people wanted Dennil's head because of the breach of trust - when community was more tangible and viable back in the day.

I never got hot and bothered about it because I was more interested in Gen Hardware/Hot Deals and taking advantage of awesomeness that was Value America and coupon codes and finding out that FujiFilm media was made by Taiyo Yuden (back then anyways)

Is GuTB reinstated? What about whatshisface? The guy with a billion posts?

And I gotta disagree about this being brought up "again". Many tried to post about it in the past, but those threads were always quick to the Recycle Bin. Hence the title I chose for the thread...it's never really been discussed. In any case, it's an interesting and entertaining story, and after eight years there really shouldn't be any hard feelings left.

What's missing from this story is the real reason he was banned and it wasn't because of the NoWhereMom ruse, it was due to his actions as a Mod to try and keep from be exposed as a fake and a weirdo. He was one of the more influential members and Mods back then, in tight with Russ, the Head Honcho of the Mods, he was a leader of the Anandtech Seti Crowd and one of the first Anandtechers made an Elite Member. No this farcical BS about NWM wouldn't have been enough to ban him, it was the damage he did as a Mod, the abuse of his power as a Mod that caused him to be ostracized from the community and sent packing for many years.

Haha. That's rich. If that's true, why do we have certain mods today acting far worse than DF ever did and doing so with complete immunity? Yeah, wrong forum for the question, but that's a crock.

Well, a BBC4 radio programme about the Nowheremom hoax and its aftermath is currently at the editing stage. Should air soon. I helped them locate Vapor (pointed them to his Ars Technica profile, which has his email address) so they interviewed both of us. This should allow people to gain a more complete picture of the actions, reactions and motivations surroundings those events when they listen to it.
