Can you buy Office for Mac digitally?

Friend just got a new Macbook Air, does not have the external drive for it and needs to buy Office. At work so can't find much around the filter here, do they offer it digitally online or do you need to buy it phsyically and install it?

No, but it can be installed over a local network if you have another Mac with an optical drive.

I know it's possible. I say that because I've done it before through some sort of discount at my work. After purchasing online, I get sent a link in my email to download and install.

I apologize. Microsoft's product page is less than helpful and mentions an optical drive in the system requirements, but on a another page on their site, we find this. As far as I can tell from a brief perusal of Microsoft's page, one still needs to purchase the disc to get a product key but then can use the link I sent you to download it digitally.

Just guessing they'll have you download an iso, with the intention of burning it.
